If a roadsign says a location is x miles away, is that straight line distance, or via the road
I understood you, I just can’t imagine why any jurisdiction would measure that distance in a straight line rather than via the indicated route.
Had to think of somewhere which would have a significant difference between the two...

Even without a precise location for the centre of Bradford (it's probably best you don't know) this is definitely the distance by road. It's only 5 miles in a straight line.
It should be via the road, although it's all a bit hit and miss.
Growing up there were road signs in my village where the distance to the next village increased as you followed the signs.
