  • Outdoor kitchen build is going surprisingly well. Treated myself to a new tenon saw.

  • We overloaded some coat hooks in our hallway and they've pulled out of the wall (which is masonry).

What's the best way to refit the hooks (which are attached to a board and screwed in)? Can we re-use the original holes with some type of expander plug, or should I drill some new ones?

  • Where's a good place to buy mdf or ply that will be cut to one's specs in London to build a cupboard? Will probably include fuck ups and be rather piece-meal while I work it out. Also not a huge project but will only be easy shapes like rectangles and squares...

  • I'm sure there was a few posts a while ago about some expanding plugs that you soaked in water before inserting in the old holes, or maybe just my feeble mind getting confused...

  • Tiswas, the man!

  • Sketchup is as good as any a tool to mock it up

Then you can plan your cuts here

  • Thanks dude. Appreciate it!

  • You can reuse the holes if the plug you want to use will go in and grip. Assume the wall is brick. If it’s cinder block all bets are off.

Usually when these things pull out it’s because the wrong type of plug…or no plug at all has been used. If you were unlucky it was because they went in to the mortar rather than the brick.

So get some plugs, get the right drill bit, see if the drill bit will go in to the correct depth without any slop. If there’s slop you’ll need new holes or a bigger fixing. If the bit won’t go in just drill to the correct depth then tap the plugs in.

  • Anyone know anywhere to get Siberian larch battens without paying 90 quid delivery fee?

Looks like you can collect from Moreton too, not far from Chipping Ongar.

  • Talk to me about cordless tools. I’m going to be laying underfloor heating which means notching out joists and floorboards and screwing battens.

I want to get a circular saw, multi tool and a impact driver.

Makita has always been my go-to but I’ve had a battery die recently and replacements are steep. Knock off ‘ LXT Compatible’ batteries don’t have a good rep.

I’m not 100% wedded to the brand and now thinking about going for Erbauer. Basically a Screwfix own brand. The tools are slightly cheaper and the batteries considerably cheaper.

Any thoughts? My gut feeling is that Screwfix are pretty much no questions asked on returns for their own kit based on previous experience and therefore I’ve probably got nothing to lose on a ~£300 outlay.

  • Cheers. Pretty punchy pricing though. Are you making those places up?

  • The items you want don’t come in a kit, though you can often find excellent deals on impact drivers with 2 batteries, and buy the circular saw and multitool body only?

I recently got a Dewalt brushless 18v circular saw, it’s really excellent.

Makita tools seem good value compared to others body only, but batteries seem expensive.

  • If you basically using them for a once in a blue moon occasion id buy the cheaper ones. If you are doing it for a job buy the best you can afford. I use milwaukee, its good but pricey and probs wouldnt buy them if i didnt use them all the time. I also very rarely use the circular saw now with the multitool for doing stuff like that.

I have MW but I do use them quite a bit. Lots of stuff to fuck up I mean fix at our place.

  • Punchy? I’ve not looked in a while but they were always on the lower end of the scale.

Yes, all made up. Off to Shellow Bowells later, just down Turkey Cock Lane.

  • How complicated would it be to make a wooden chopping board?
I have a mind to try and make my own using local wood from the New Forest, or Southampton wood recycling project.

Making an end grain board would be ideal, but looks pretty challenging using hand/diy tools (I.e. don’t have a table saw, planer ala youtube)

I have glue, clamps, saw, random orbital sander and mineral oil.

  • ‘Best’ is subjective though. I always thought Makita was great but after a battery shit its pants after not that much use, I’m having doubts. I’m not a tradesman but an enthusiastic DIYer with a whole house to renovate, doing as much as I can myself.

Do you find the multitool a bit loud for using instead of a circular saw? Our plumber said he’s sick of his because it makes a racket.

  • I’m after a reusable dust mask that will fit in a pocket. The RZ masks look ideal but don’t seem that readily available over here. Need something to wear on site when, for example, some absolute fucking doyle manager decides they need to try and sweep up all the plasterboard dust with a yard brush - creating a cloud of dust throughout the building.

Disposable ones just fall apart and never fit that well.

  • Excellent, thanks

  • A J Ferguson are pretty good. I used tgem for a batch of ply boxes I made. They’re the ones Peter Millard uses.

  • We use them a lot, most of the time I’m using it to notch out a small number of joists. If I had a lot I’d get the circular out.

Noise wise, I find the drills and them all defending, I mostly wear Bose qc headphones so they take the high end out which is good!

  • A half or full face with swappable filters is what you need. A 3M one is great now you can get the filters again.

Won't fit in the pocket though. No reusable mask will.

  • Disposable ones just fall apart and never fit that well.

To be honest you actually need to be fitted for a mask. You can't have facial hair for a mask to fit.

At the start of the pandemic I was fitted for a 3M FFP3 mask. Had to shave the beard off, had a 15 minute test on a ventilation unit to make sure it fitted, have a certificate that a 3M FFP3 mask fits.

Have I been supplied with 3M FFP3 masks by the company?

    Have I fuck.
