  • I might be interested in one of those, if it looks a bit like this?

    https://www.wigglestatic.com/product-media/5360114660/Garmin-HRM-Run-Heart-Rate-Monitors-Black-Red-010-10997-12.jpg?w=430&h=430&a=7

I miss all the additional metrics to look at

  • The one with the white figure on it is HRM Run - but the version before they worked for swimming.
Then 2 of the older ones and a Polar bluetooth one.

I'll check they all work first though...

  • This is a bit shit, especially for the 3 other 4x100 team members who face being dq'd.

  • I doubt I could repeat it to such precise timing... pure fluke!

  • The track was popular last night. Not often a local legend comes back from the Olympics as a champion and pops by to show off the bling.

  • Does anyone else suffer from their hr rate monitor causing an indentation in their risk resulting in an ungodly smell?

It’s not even done up tight

Awesome. He trained with out juniors in Greenwich very briefly before heading off to Crystal Palace and then onward.

  • With the Tritons?

  • Yeah, swam for a little while with them I think, possibly at Eltham college (I'm guessing about when/where as I didn't know much about the junior side back then)

  • Have heard nothing but good things about the Tritons. Seem like a well run local club.

  • Thanks. Certainly been a good community throughout various lockdowns. 'Virtual' challenges went well.
Juniors are going well enough now that I think they're struggling to find the coaches and we've got a waiting list. Got a few kids being invited to some of the elite races, so maybe we'll have our own Alex Yee someday 🤞
Until then I'll just cry myself to sleep be proud at being beaten over 5k by kids running 18mins.

  • mine went haywire a few years back and was less reliable than my wrist one. Haven't missed it to be honest, I rarely bother to look at HR.

Used to get the occasional chafing from it too. I never raced in one either, too constrictive.

  • My Garmin forerunner 35 (or something like that) broke the other day - one strap snapped off at the base. I tried to glue it back on with no luck :( Super annoying as the watch itself works fine but short of taping it to my arm (which I did do once...) it makes the entire watch useless.

I started looking at other Garmins but in the end I bought a Xiaomi color sport on a bit of a whim (it was half the price of even the cheapest Garmin). Once I got it home I decided I hated it (didn't like the colour and it doesn't sync to Strava) but then I realised you could change the straps and there was a workaround with Strava, and now I actually really like it (it's only day 3). It has a wrist HRM but it seems pretty accurate based on what I know about my heart and current health.

  • After using it for months and getting the software update that lets me sync structured sessions from TrainingPeaks, which is ace, I can say that my Wahoo Rival is really good. Similar to a Garmin but with a much better app. Optical HR is passable.

  • Parkrun today with my 8 year old who’s graduated from the junior 2ks to the 5km

Amusingly the 30 minute runners are more pushy and competitive when faced with an 8 year old than the field at 20 minutes

  • Seems fairly lucky with the chest strap, mines pretty funky and isn’t allowed within the house, so that’s a def downside

  • Marple beer run...

    Edit: now with pace graph

  • This!

My two stepsons were smashing out sub-20 minute parkruns when they were 10 years old.. absolutely demoralising to be passed by a kid in full Barcelona kit and minecraft sweatbands.

  • Has anyone listened to the Huberman lab podcast about the nervous system? Incredible, some episodes very relevant to running, I highly recommend.

  • Does anyone else suffer from their hr rate monitor causing an indentation in their risk resulting in an ungodly smell?

I have an odd rash under mine on and off. Right now it's not that bad, will try and get a photo of it next time it is a bit scaly there. I wear my 945 pretty much 24/7 and I use the watch for swimming and running. I'm not as hairy as that photo though - I have finer and lighter hair on my arms, mostly because I burned most of it off working in catering 25 years ago.

Generally it's only smelly if I don't clean it well enough. Well enough for me is taking it off at least twice a day and cleaning the wrist area well (with soap) and also giving the back of the watch a good clean to get rid of any salt build up and any skin cells that will accumulate if you don't clean there.

I have a Dettol branded anti-bacterial soap bar in the bathroom.

tl;dr clean the wrist AND the back of the watch twice a day and there should be no problem. If you do this already then clean it more often or pay more attention to it.

  • Hibiscrub is really good for this. Cleaning the rubber and plastic and skin. I dilute it 1/20 wipe and air dry the plastic and rubber and wipe and rinse skin after 5ish mins with water. Also good for groin and gooch based irritation. It kills everything bacteria, fungus and yeast but safe on skin if diluted enough. I used to get 2 sore stripes on my top ribs from my old hr strap.

  • parkrun lesson this morning: always read the news page. Danson Park event cancelled due to funfair. D'oh! Was going to be my first parkrun at my new local venue since moving. Ah well, got a run in. I did manage to chat with a volunteer (who clearly didn't know either) who informed me that there's a new Charlton Park event starting next week, which will be very handy being even closer. I've read about plans for the run recently without any confirmation of a start date, so will keep an eye on this. Would be nice to do the inaugural event.

Marathon training highlight of the week was 12 miles @ 5:42/m (bang on 2:29 target pace) on Thursday evening. 6 weeks to London. Eek!

  • Nice one you are flying 💪

  • Deadwater started today, tracker here: https://track.trail.live/event/deadwater

Stage two starts at 8am tomorrow, I am number 11 of anyone wants to follow a forumenger running from Scotland to Wales.

Today went well, joint first place!
