  • How far is this commute? Why not an electric scooter or even electric bike?

Honestly 50cc scooter will be a pile of shit, you'd be better on an ebike. 125 at minimum if you do want a big motor.

  • Looks a good example, congrats! I've had the Street and the Speed. Both incredibly good, but the Speedy was amazing

  • That’s good to know, bought without even sitting on one!

  • What model year is it? I'm guessing pre 2011 ish due to the round frog eye headlights?

  • I'm now going down an Internet rabbit hole trying to work out whether I want a gy6 engine swap or to bore out to 125 ....

The last couple of days I've been thinking about either trading up to a Ducati 1198s or getting the new Honda Super Cub c125. Obviously very similar specs, but the little Honda never dips below 160mpg! Think I'm getting old.

  • 2009, high miles but same owner for 10 years. Was only £2k - didn't want to spend a lot as I don't think I will use it much

  • Yeah that's the kind of thing I'd be after if I got another bike

  • The money you save in fuel would pay for a Ducati within a year…

  • Like 5 miles. It goes down a very busy dual carriage way though.

We do have several Treadwell Neo ebikes and a a Cake bike at work that we can borrow though, which i will from time to time, but dont want to have to rely on them. I'd love an electric bike like the Cake bike, but they are ridiculously expensive.

I'll also be using my road bike a few days a week when i want to go for a ride before/after work.

  • Then the same fear of an ebike would apply to a 50cc scooter. You'll be lucky to hit 30mph on one. You need a 125cc or e bike and find a way around the duel carriageway.

In all honesty. Just drive when you don't want to cycle. And if you do want to get a proper motorbike in time do that, but the middle ground option is bad.

  • very busy dual carriage way

    Yeah skinny's mainly right.

I used to do a stretch of a busy dual carriage way on my 125. It was doable, but not great. Mine was fairly quick too and would happily sit at 50-60mph, after that though your ringing it's neck slowly to get that last 50-60mph.

I'm assuming if the whole journey is 5 miles then it's not too long on a 125cc. Ultimately you'll only be able to find out by doing it.

If I were you I'd do your CBT then rent a bike. I can't remember who it was, but someone on here did this to practice for their full licence. I remember thinking at the time that their net cost of renting was lower and less hassle than me buying my 125.

  • but someone on here did this to practice for their full licence.

I did. Rented for a week to get my head around the clutch being operated by my left hand rather than foot. I think it was £300 for the week and obviously didn't have to worry about insurance or tax etc. Petrol is pennies. Then did my DAS in 3 days

  • In fairness I kept took ages to do my full licence so it might not be fair to count all those years of insurance. But given that the first years' insurance is a fucker and could well be close to double that, I still think that's excellent value. Not to mention a much lower time cost Vs searching for, and buying a bike.

  • With @skinny on this. If you’re doing duals, either go full electric or full license. A 50cc will be outright dangerous and a 125cc will get tedious very quickly.

I would LOVE to go electric but it’s pricey like you said.
Even on a full tilt bike, you’re still guzzling less than a car.

De-restrict an eBike and go ham?

  • Great pic! I will stick with the present 😀

  • Aye, me too.

  • That is a lovely Vespa 90 (I think) though!

  • 125 primavera

  • That is obviously considered collectively cooler but for some reason I prefer the standard c125 Supercub as remember seeing these quite a lot when I was younger. If I lived in London it would make a lot of sense.

  • I've always quite fancied a sleeper older c90 that's been tuned up. There's a 'c50' on eBay with a 125 engine in it at the moment.
    New ones look decent too.

  • Turbo- and Supercharging C90s is a thing.

I've heard it's often done at higher altitudes where the bike struggles with the thin air.
Or in Britain where you want to knock 5 seconds off your 0-30 times

  • Ah yeah, lovely!
