  • It's meant to be someone climbing, which I'm guessing is why the pointy part of the helmet it up. They even got a brother to wear it. Not as in your face as the watermelon but the comments do seem to show that people aren't happy with it.

  • Climbing at altitude. On a TT bike with an aero helmet. ok

  • As an aside, this design was supposed to give props to domestiques. But someone riding "at altitude" with their head down in a TT helmet is just a shit image imo

    Edit:what he said

  • You're all missing the true explanation

  • people underestimate how easy it is for a corporate product decision to be made in a moronically brainless way

Would be good to get the opinions of someone working in the fashion industry. It’s not like clothing companies have never caught flak for controversial or racist designs.

  • At my company we have a gateway decision before anything hits the public realm. On paper we call it a Cultural Appropriateness Check (CAC) but we've come to refer to it as the "are we racist check".

It actually caught a big one for us. We had a logo designed by a third party contractor and our CAC discovered that the designer had borrowed imagery from the symbol for a native American deity. Dodged a bullet on that one.

In reality the tribe in question had basatardised the symbol and plastered it over a bunch of casinos but all that meant was that they likely could afford to nuke us in court even if we did wanted to go ahead with it for whatever insane reason. One colleague did pipe up to ask whether "all publicity is good publicity" but was quickly put right on that.

  • It's a colab, Cinelli x Futura. The artist is famous for his characters who have pointy cone heads. Theres no time trial, aero helmet, mountains involved. Just a silhouette of one the artists dudes standing on the pedals.

  • I think, though, that when someone submitted the artwork, someone at Cinelli might have thought "Hang on... that's not good... how can we make this better?" rather than just going ahead with it.

  • Theres no time trial

It's definitely a silhouette of a person riding a bike with Cinelli Angel bars so it is a TT bike but yeah

  • I imagine it's the TTT and this is the domestique they could afford to use up and drop, as I don't think their as useful in an ITT. Or maybe I'm just giving Cinelli too much credit and it's just a shit idea.

  • Futura, the artist, who is black*, has already said:

    • TBH I don't know how he describes himself

  • Intentional or not, the Cinelli/Paul Smith cap including press shot is racist as fuck. Some tip top racial bias over the past few pages as well

  • Probably a discussion for the BLM thread but it's interesting to see where these things sit.
When someone sees a product on a shelf, chances are they are not going to be aware of who the designer was and what their intention for the design was. If they (the customer) are offended by the design, does the unknown intention of the artist somehow nullify the customer's feelings about it.
Taken to the extreme, if a black artist was to produce a tshirt that literally said KKK on it, is that tshirt not racist and therefore not allowed to cause offence because the artist is black?
As several of us are here in this discussion, I'm white british so I'm just trying to understand more and widen my understanding. And genuine apologies if my ignorance is frustrating/annoying/stupid/offensive

  • No particular judgement on racial biases expressed/observed here. Interesting to see which parts people picked up on and none of those people actually took part in or promoted the racist material.

Interesting point/example of a black artist using using kkk on a shirt. I'd hope that the artist/designer put some thought into what message they're trying to put across. If it just incorporated it into something else (looking at all the TreKKK tags on social media recently) then it can be fairly obvious what the message is.
If that designer wants to use purely the kkk imagery for shock factor, I'd still expect some sort of following material or backstory to be highlighted, otherwise the message is a bit blurred and can easily be interpreted in quite the opposite way than intended.
Which is the problem with pointy head man, it's a bit open to interpretation to someone looking at one of the artists pieces for the first time. Not saying it's their fault, but if I had created it myself then I'd probably be aware of what it might be viewed as, even if that's not my intent.
Then again, it's perfectly possible that the artist hasn't got the perception or had the life experiences that would make them aware of such interpretation. But it would surprise me. Anyhow, they're not to blame, and I don't really blame anyone for being sceptical when it comes to Cinelli. They have a bit of a reputation for shitty advertisement, particularly sexist ones.

Yeah exactly, this is what I was getting at in a roundabout way

  • Some tip top racial bias over the past few pages as well

Yeah, not proud of it. But at least I've learned to spot it just about and don't feel like I have a right to decide what is racist or not. Ive lead a life that has never been touched by prejudice and it shows.

  • Everton @Everton We've lost far, far too many Evertonians over the
    course of the pandemic.

We wish they could all be here with us today.

    RIP Blues.

  • Is that Anne Frank in the corner?

  • Yeah, I think Everton FC allowed people to submit photos of supposed fans, so one of the other names was Mike Oxlong. The club have deleted it now.

  • i bet there's a self-congratulatory thread on one of the Xchans

  • An old colleague (anti vaxxer and conspiracy theory crackpot) just slipped into my DMs on insta comparing her "plight" to the treatment of European Jews at the hands of the Nazis...

I saw that shit happening on the news but didn't think anyone I knew could be that fucking moronic... Time to say bye-bye, can't let these Neanderthals get too close...

  • unfortunately there's no vaccine for stupidity
