It's a 37.5cl bottle, weekday style!

This is the kitchen knife I end up using most of the time, a japanese Tojiro Nakiri carbon steel.

While designed for veggie prep, it´s very versatile for most cutting tasks once you get comfortable with the form factor.

Super easy to sharpen, and stays sharp. The steel is very reactive as seen on the picture.

Hi folks,

After a bunch of Covid delay I'll finally be getting married in October and I've decided on some 70mm Higonokamis with brass handle and blue paper steel blades as groomsmen's gifts...

I want to add initials to the handles and I reckon they'll look better stamped than engraved (I'm keen to DIY too)... can anyone advise on what stamps to buy for this or how best to go about it?

Might have to have something to fill the void in the handle.

I think the easiest way to DIY is with a standard set of letter stamps which would do the job fine. You're only issue will be getting every letter nicely aligned, but that depends on how picky you / they are.

I think you'd need to find a piece of metal you don't care about that is the same thickness as the blade to wedge into the handle whilst you are stamping, otherwise you will distort it.

Only other thing you'll need is a big hammer and a sturdy bench. Enjoy!

10mm will be way too big, I think even 5mm would be big for a knife handle. Especially if one of the groomsmen has a particularly long name.

Yeah they look good, might go for smaller letters but I see they've got some and as you suggest I was anticipating needa piece of steel plate to put into the middle of the handle while stamping...

I was mostly concerned about needing a special stamp for brass but I'm sure hardened steel will be fine?

Might buy an extra knife for myself to practice on before I do the other ones...

I have a 3mm lowercase and 5mm uppercase set, and a higonokami. I'll try and get a photo so you can see the scale of letters on the handle.

Alternatively, Opinel will laser engrave their blades.

I was thinking of stamping them across the handle below the kanji script like this... of course one of my groomsmen has three initials!

I always feel like laser engraving feels weak... it never seems to be a satisfactory depth unfortunately (I realise this is peak fussiness but still...)

In my experience it is incredibly difficult to maintain alignment of the letters - even when using angle-blocks clamped to the workpiece.
Also, you need to keep the stamping pressure equal on each letter.
I found the best way of doing the latter was to punch a dimple into the tail end of the number punch, and then apply the pressure using an automatic centre punch, placed into the dimple and dialled to the pressure you desire/the material dictates.
