Like 5 miles. It goes down a very busy dual carriage way though.
We do have several Treadwell Neo ebikes and a a Cake bike at work that we can borrow though, which i will from time to time, but dont want to have to rely on them. I'd love an electric bike like the Cake bike, but they are ridiculously expensive.
I'll also be using my road bike a few days a week when i want to go for a ride before/after work.

Then the same fear of an ebike would apply to a 50cc scooter. You'll be lucky to hit 30mph on one. You need a 125cc or e bike and find a way around the duel carriageway.
In all honesty. Just drive when you don't want to cycle. And if you do want to get a proper motorbike in time do that, but the middle ground option is bad.

I used to do a stretch of a busy dual carriage way on my 125. It was doable, but not great. Mine was fairly quick too and would happily sit at 50-60mph, after that though your ringing it's neck slowly to get that last 50-60mph.
I'm assuming if the whole journey is 5 miles then it's not too long on a 125cc. Ultimately you'll only be able to find out by doing it.
If I were you I'd do your CBT then rent a bike. I can't remember who it was, but someone on here did this to practice for their full licence. I remember thinking at the time that their net cost of renting was lower and less hassle than me buying my 125.

With @skinny on this. If you’re doing duals, either go full electric or full license. A 50cc will be outright dangerous and a 125cc will get tedious very quickly.
I would LOVE to go electric but it’s pricey like you said.
Even on a full tilt bike, you’re still guzzling less than a car.De-restrict an eBike and go ham?

How far is this commute? Why not an electric scooter or even electric bike?
Honestly 50cc scooter will be a pile of shit, you'd be better on an ebike. 125 at minimum if you do want a big motor.
