  • Hello motorcycle people!

Quick newb question….. I’m considering getting a little 50cc scooter/moped (what is the preferred term!?) for commuting, as want to minimise use of my big planet killing Discovery, and just use it for long trips/load carrying. Have had full regular driving license for 20 odd years….. am I right in thinking I still need to do the CBT test to ride a 50cc scooter? Will I have to have L plates attached forever unless I do a full big boy motorcycle test?

Soz for the total newb question. I know nothing about motorised two wheels.

Worth checking exactly how many years. Not 100% but I think if you got your licence before 1999 I don't think you need a CBT for a 50cc as it will have been included in your licence. Have a look on the back of your DL.

If you need to do a CBT you may as well buy a 125cc as they're more powerful. You're in the West Country right? Idk how a 50cc will do on hills, even if it's a modern one.

But yeah without a full license you will have to redo it every couple of years and have L plates.

  • 17th birthday was in 2000, so looks like I’m a year short! 😩

Thanks for the info. CBT it is. Are bikes provided for CBT?

I would like to get full license at some point, and move on to bigger bikes, but think little 50cc nipper will do for my needs until I’m a bit more confident.

  • I think though I'm not certain, that you may only have to do the CBT once if you're happy on a 50cc and wouldn't need Ls. You'd have to renew for a 125
