I am with @amey. Go for some old Deore / XT stuff.
Up until 9speed, almost everything Shimano is cross-compatible. You can even run most 9speed MTB derailleurs with 10speed road shifters.
Take your fancy new cranks, use the inner two positions and 46/30 or similar chainrings plus an older mtb derailleur that can handle up to 34t and you got yourself a really nice range of gears. That's what I am running on my Raleigh.
