Why not run the cranks as 2x by using the middle and inner positions? That way you get a <34 little ring whilst keeping the 2x simplicity.

I think it looks really good with the right chainrings, but my googling isn't up to scratch today. Only issue/totally not a problem is that you might need a triple FD if the size difference between rings is too big?
