there's been a steady escalation in power outputs - cosworth sierra had just 204hp and was thought of as pretty radical when it was first released.
I'm not sure where / when you really need over 250BHP, but i've never driven an AMG merc or a BMW M car so maybe i just don't know what i'm missing.
Isn’t this partially about modern cars being heavy (/safe) and needing to keep the power to weight ratio up?
