  • I mean this is straight nonsense because you’ve got a boner for 500bhp wagons (but it’s ok because it’s petrol not diesel), let’s not pretend.

I like you man, but saying 268bhp isn’t enough is a bit daft.

  • Ah fair enough. He’ll sell it on to someone who’ll fix and enjoy it.

I’d have a go at a steering rack, and I definitely couldn’t justify moving a car on based on bubbling arches!

  • but it will probably do 120

If my 320d can do 110 uphill without the pedal to the floor, I’m sure it’ll do more than 120 (especially considering the extra 120bhp).

  • I mean this is straight nonsense because you’ve got a boner for 500bhp wagons

this did make me laugh and also a very fair point.

there's been a steady escalation in power outputs - cosworth sierra had just 204hp and was thought of as pretty radical when it was first released.

I'm not sure where / when you really need over 250BHP, but i've never driven an AMG merc or a BMW M car so maybe i just don't know what i'm missing.

  • I'm not sure where / when you really need over 250BHP

I've got a Seat Leon Cupra with 300bhp and that thing is an absolute rocket. I can't think of a single time when I've needed all the power on the road. Have I buried the throttle for shits and giggles? Yes, but do it for longer than a few seconds and you're into driving ban territory.

  • Pretty much the point I was making.

  • That’s about the output of my 130i and it’s a hoot, but it’s all at the top end. I dunno what that 735 is - is it the turbo 6 or v8? If its delivery is anything like mine I can see the point that it’s not well suited to a limo.

  • Isn’t this partially about modern cars being heavy (/safe) and needing to keep the power to weight ratio up?

  • I have a e87 130i with the n52 engine and it ‘only’ produces 265 - whilst it’s a lighter car it’s certainly not underpowered.

  • Hey snap! Best car I ever owned.

  • I get it, but if someone’s coming from an e46 330i they’re not going to feel underpowered in a 268bhp 7 series.
95-99% of this forum will drive cars under 268bhp FFS.

  • I admit to an elderly Z4 with 250ish, great fun on twisty country B roads. I live in a rural area surrounded by twisty B roads. On 'normal' A roads or motorways it will very quickly reach 'hello officer, please look after this licence for a year'. Almost all modern cars will reach that speed, some quicker than others, higher top speeds are pretty pointless.

  • 3 household vehicles:

    68 BHP/tonne
    169 BHP/tonne
    922 BHP/tonne

    Trololol

  • Peak power and torque are at 6 and 4K revs respectively on the n62, it’s not like you’ve got to rag it to 10k to get it to go anywhere.

  • I reckon if the readers of this thread tried a 730i and a 760i back to back there would be zero doubt which made the better luxury limo.

I’m swapping my 550bhp estate for a 200bhp van, which is going to mean an adjustment to my driving style, although the estates 700Nm is what I use everyday- the max power very seldom. The van has 450Nm. Maybe the van needs a V8.

  • I reckon if the readers of this thread tried a 730i and a 760i

That’s not the argument tho. I’d rather have a 330i, but it does half the mpg of the the 320d. The 320d is plenty sufficient for driving around, in the same way that the 268bhp of the 7 series is. Yes more power is nice, and more enjoyable, but to call it necessity isn’t realistic.

I’d love to see the MPG on the 6l 760i. Sounds dead practical.

  • Doesn't everyone commute on a TT bike? It is the fastest.

  • This is LFGSS, what's this bike of which you speak?

  • Tbf I commuted on a lo-pro for years. As has been pointed out, this might not be the best place to argue about practicality!

  • Probably my best car as well, the engine is fantastic, still have a soft spot for the numerous mx5’s I’ve owned though.
Also own a 130bhp t5 and collecting next week a triumph street triple.
    Variety is great

  • Just bought a E39 530i to go with it. It’s got the 228bhp M54, the predecessor to the N52. Absolutely spoilt for engine noise now.

  • My old M135i was silly fast (3.0L flat six… around 340ish HP I think?). Great fun. But I came to the conclusion after a year and 20k miles that it was totally stupid for a daily driver, and completely pointless for someone that doesn’t do a lap of the Nurburgring every day on their way home, so sold it. I was finding myself doing 110 on the M5 without even realising it way to often. Was surprised to come away from that year with only 6 points on my license. I’m glad i realised after a year that it had totally changed the way I drove, and had turned me into a complete twat of a driver without even realising.

This was just my experience of a powerful car though…. Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion on the matter , and obviously we all have different points of view.

I do have to agree with others that i think Neils argument about a car with 260 odd HP is not enough is totally ridiculous though…. Yeah, it may not be ‘fast’ but it’s more than enough for pretty much any size car intended for regular everyday use on UK roads!

  • My last observation on this- it’s what all the professional car reviewers said about it when it was launched. I’ve never driven one, so this is received wisdom, and I don’t particularly have a dog in this fight/ just thought 6pt might be able to dissuade his dad by pointing out that the 730 is the “wrong engine” version.

Personally I wouldn’t buy one, I’d get the V12. If a car ever came with that option I think you have to take it (if you can find it).

  • On the subject of 7 series and power to weight. The tech on the new ones chassis and body is impressive.

  • Bad week for Golf rear windows.

Anyone have a no tint, but heated GTI window with spoiler holes for sale? Gulp
