  • At least it was last time I swapped to a new device.

  • Okay.
Looks like a really good deal, just umming and ahhing over whether I need a new one, when old one is still working and usable, suppose I could always sell on old one, or gift it to someone..

  • I didn't need the PaperWhite, but we swapped out our older Kindle 4s for them a couple of years ago - they went on to our parents who hadn't really considered getting an e-reader before but both appreciate the convenience of shelves of books in something that small.

They're lovely bits of kit, and making them waterproof makes them almost perfect holiday gadgets. Not as nice as the top of the range Oasis, but £229 for an e-reader seems a step too far...

Note: Just looked and the price is back up to £109.99 for the coloured versions and £119.99 for the black...gah!

  • Looked up mine and it’s a paper white 2, with only 1.3gb of storage.
Should have pulled the trigger when I had the chance! Will put it in a wish list and see if they drop the price again..

  • I can't remember very clearly how it all panned out, but I definitely completely broke one and don't know what happened to the other.

I would avoid trying it again.

  • I can’t seem to see that offer on the app, but if I follow that link I see the offer.
    Weird.

  • If any y'all upgrading, do you have any very cheap old ones to sell? Considering a spare backup to add to family library so I can lend books to my housemate

  • If I get the one on offer above, mine will be available.

  • It's their "treasure truck". Limited time offers that are sent out each day.

  • hmmm, if it's the same one I was looking at before, just in black will pull the trigger..

Edit: Trigger has been pulled, one is winging it's way to me as I type.
@PhilDAS if you still want one, as I said earlier, my 2013 paperwhite with 2GB internal storage, with 1.25GB available to the user, is going to be free

  • Thanks for the link. Purchased.

  • How much would you like for it? I'll check with my other half who's the one who wants to use it to share with said other housemate

  • 🔫 thanks for that also pulled the trigger. Been meaning to for years.

  • They are on ebay for £20 and up, so what £15.
I can either clear it down. Or load it up with a load of ebooks that a friend gave me on a pen drive, mostly bestsellers, science fiction and thrillers, can dig out a list if you'd like.

  • I use a site called b-ok to find booked can you do the same with the paperwhite?

    Does it have a browser?

  • Found the ebook repository, has something like 1400 books on it, really wide selection. Can punt over the list if you'd like to see exactly what's on it.

    Let me know

  • Calibre does a decent job of punting hooky books onto a kindle.

  • Wow. Yeah why not. Think I'll take it anyway though

  • Yes, Kindles are surprisingly open. So long as it's in the right format you can email any book to your Kindle and it will store it in their cloud to download and sync across all devices.

No reason to buy all your books from the Amazon store, there are other stores that are compatible or things such as project Gutenberg with out of copyright books.

  • I had great success with Library Genesis

  • Calibre can convert epub to .mobi or AZW (or whatever file format they like these days)

  • I was trying to go the other way as I downloaded calibre to be the repository for the books I've got from Amazon, so I've got a copy somewhere other than in the cloud. But haven't found a way of automating the emailing a copy to yourself as you have to do each book individually, I'm upto 130 odd and counting and it's a bit of a ball ache doing them one by one.

edit: googling seems to say now I can download direct from my kindle or through the kindle mac app (which if reviews are to be taken at face value is buggy as all hell).
Also when bringing directly into calibre it strips out the DRM and you can choose what format you want it to be in..
    Will investigate further..

  • I’m probably being a bit thick here, but how do I email a book to my kindle?

  • On my Paperwhite:
(Three lines in the top right)
    Settings
    Device options
    Personalise your Kindle
    Send-to-kindle email

Here it has A @kindle.com email with my name and some numbers.
Fairly sure I emailed myself some PDFs years back, but that was on a keyboard 3g one.
