I'm guessing that was not insignificantly due to older people being a bunch of racists.
Ironic, as Charleston / jazz / swing is just so very white nowadays (as in there does not seem to be much diversity among participants).
I remember watching a short film about how the Charleston was angrily rejected as stupid (or even offensive) by older people in the 1920s and from that it'd be quite easy to argue that middle aged men thinking shuffling looks stupid is more of the same. However, 100 years on, the Charleston still looks fucking stupid so the grumpy middle aged folk were right in the 1920s and they're probably still right in the 2020s.
Shuffle dancing makes you look like a twat. I also hate it.
