Anyone with an allotment?

  • I quite it tbh

  • I’ve planted some kale and spinach and need to protect it from being eaten. I’ve got netting is there anything else I can do to avoid inevitable disappointment

  • I've found our spinach gets left alone, no idea why.

With Kale the thing that ruined ours last year was whitefly, I'm not sure how you stop that on an allotment where it's probably on loads of plots. Didn't bother with any brassicas this year as a result.

  • Ten lifted, about 40 to go. Going to have to make bhajis.

  • We built some pretty robust cages and stapled netting onto them. The kale has been pretty great under there, though all the cauliflowers bolted and I wonder if that was a result of a microclimate within the netting or something

  • Half of our cauliflowers bolted, I assumed it was because they got a bit dry and sunny. Not sure why but some are actually making cauliflowers, just not sure when to harvest them

  • I’ll build a frame and netting then and cross my fingers.

  • It’s that time, lots of everything… lots.

  • Productive!

Got a good runner/french bean harvest earlier as well as the seemingly invincible chard still going strong. Raspberries are coming to the end now.

Got lots of potatoes still in the ground. Anyone know how long it's safe to leave Anya in for?

  • Going to leave our spuds for a couple more weeks but not much longer as slugs are doing their worse now.
Ate some blackberries today, soft fruit is coming on - greengage, plums, sloes, damsons all looking good.

  • Not sure why but some are actually making cauliflowers, just not sure when to harvest them

I did some caulis last year, they were weird. A few of them made cauliflowers quite early but when to pick them was really hard. I left some too long and they started opening up a bit and sprouting. I then had one plant which did nothing for ages then made the best cauliflower of the lot about 6-8 weeks after the others.

  • That’s a haul I hope to have myself one day.

I need to be more organised and decide what I’m going, when it goes in, when it’s getting harvested etc etc

  • Evening progress on the second half plot

  • Excellent haul, I'm interested in a pic of your potato patch with them in if you've got one.

  • Cheers. Actually in that last picture, to the left, is half of one half (as there’s about 20-odd plants left to dig. Directly opposite was the same amount, which weren’t so productive. This haul came from about 10 plants which was amazing.
Edit. Here’s a bit from about a month back. That’s about a quarter of the potato planting.

  • Ah, looks great. What a huge ammount of space you have there.

  • Has anyone on here grown water melons?

I’ve been eating loads of watermelon recently and decided to try and germinate some seeds. Surprisingly it went well and I germinated 12 seeds.

I’m going to get some fresh manure to create a hot box. Does this sound about right?

  • What’s wrong with my toms

  • Looks a bit like some very localised blight but that should start in the leaves, really. Maybe some kind of stem canker?

  • Just as they’re starting to turn red as well

  • You can take the fruit off and store them on a sunny windowsill with a ripe banana for a few days, this should ripen them quickly.
