I wonder if dogs can smell or otherwise tell if a partner will have long term health. In reference to your words above, I mean in terms of the breeding that causes these problems; I wonder if given the choice they would breed with another of the same ilk or choose a partner with a healthier potential?

They're dogs, they'll bang a soft toy if it's roughly the right shape.
