Fire toolbox?
Removes bloatware and you can install Google play (if you didn't sideload already)Not perfect but better than stock.

I can't remember very clearly how it all panned out, but I definitely completely broke one and don't know what happened to the other.
I would avoid trying it again.

@mashton did you have any luck rooting the 5? My kids have moved on from these to actual android tablets and I wouldn’t mind tinkering with the remaining fire 5.
