  • Where were you when I needed replace the shock on my Cotic... I couldn't even find anything decent in 190 eye to eye 2nd hand and I ended up getting a CC DB Air CS that Jtech lengthened the stroke to 50mm.

For anyone that's interested I'm pretty sure the Fox can be stroked to 51mm and the CC to 50. If you're looking for fast and a lot of traction the CC will be great.

  • Where were you

It's impossible to keep up with you. Why do you think I don't want to ride with you?

    CC DB Air CS

    Excellent choice

Fox can be stroked to 51mm

You have to cut out a metal spacer, not something I would attempt myslef

  • DT Swiss F535one 140mm, 195mm steerer - £175

Cheap. What's wrong with them? 27.5 wheel?

  • They were brand new on Wiggle at £320 some time ago. This one is used so I think it's a fair price.

    27.5 wheel?

    29

Does nobody want anything that's not RS or Fox? Can't imagine DT Swiss making garbage.

  • These are great forks at this price. Much better than the pike select I had. The fancy coil+air thing really works well.

  • I'm tempted to buy them and don't need them.

I run some ONE forks on my hardtsil, I think they're great tbh.

  • will they fit a 29x2.6 with mud?
EDIT - I know I already bought a pair of these off you, still interested in another :)

  • 2.6 Mezcal. I'd say no. It'll clog real quick with a proper tyre. Would be fine without the plastic mud guard.

  • thanks, i'm out then

  • Does nobody want anything that's not RS or Fox?

  • New to mountain biking. Want to start. What bike should I buy? Most likely place I will be riding is Epping Forest. 2-3 hour rides out from London. Don't expect to do anything technical. Mainly for fitness, but want to make riding a bit more fun. Thanks from an mtb noob.

"cut" eek, can be done at the same time servicing surely.

  • Ha! I think I remember reading you advocating Whyte Vs Santa Cruz a few years ago.

  • It needs a full damper rebuild to remove that spacer. May as well buy a shock with 51mm stroke, it'll be cheaper.

120mm travel carbon or alu hardtail would get my vote.

  • Thanks. Heart wants a Highball.

  • I used to know the answer to this question

    What's your budget? :-)

  • Max £3k. Hopefully less.

  • New to mountain biking?

Why not go with an good entry level hard tail and see if/what suits you?

Something like a Trek Rosco 8. Around half your budget and if you decide you love mtb and still yern for that Santa Cruz after 6 months you’ll probably get 2/3rds or more of your purchase price back (don’t think availability is going to calm down for a while yet).

  • Thank you. I thought Whyte would be the pragmatic choice.

  • The Roscoe is nice, but 27.5+ wheels are a bit marmite and don't really suit the typical mud you'll find around Epping

Something in that price bracket and bike type seems a sensible place to start though, and a 120mm hardtail won't leave you overbiked for local riding and will still be capable of doing bigger days out

Otherwise, get a SC Highball, Specialize Epic, Scott Scale, Trek Procaliber etc, to scratch that XC race itch. XC bikes are far more capable than they used to be

  • Oops, just said Rosco as I was talking about them the other day.
If @revenant-v is of a fair height I’d definitely say look at getting at 29 wheeled bike

  • Yeah, 6'3, and was thinking 29er. Thanks folks.
