Did i miss the Li Wenwen chat? She was phenomenal and her screaming will be finding it's way onto to my partners alarm clock shortly.
Good performance from Maccormack in the welterweight final but Iglesias was too good. I'm gonna assume team GB boxing are well funded but to be regularly competing in finals is something to be chuffed about.

Oh there's a definate argument for cancellation and it's a strong one. Piers had a great time getting Covid at the Euro Finals though so his protests feel quite weak.
His reasoning for cancellation seems to be that because there are no spectators it's pointless, rather than the athletes risk covid spread and that.

speed climbing is sick... how many other variants are there?
Obvs not a summer games event but competitive ice climbing is awesome. I prefer it to any of the summer Olympic climbing events. Youtube "ice climbing world cup" if you are interested.

I stumbled onto those lifts. I think they could all bench me.
I liked the British woman's hair.

I'm still laughing over all climbers having to compete in 3 wildly different disciplines. The best speed climbers are usually pants at bouldering and lead, and I think we're going to see the overall winner decided by who doesn't fuck up in the speed climbing.
I think it's a more sensible arrangement for the next Olympics, but I'm looking forward to watching this one for the laughs.

Um, so what the fuck have I been watching on the TV the last week, Piers?

They said they did it this way because they just wanted to get it in the Olympics for now and then split the lead/bouldering from speed climbing at a later time. Which worked as planned, apparently.

Just caight up with that Den-GB team pursuit. A rare sight seeing GB fucking it up like that, dropping man3. At 60+ kph it's quite hard to coach, but there must be a way to let him know there's a gap.
For the shouting Dane, I think he thought it was the 4th Brit getting in his way or something. Why else would there be a single rider getting in his way and also with such a difference in speed. I do agree though he needs to keep his composure. But all in all, they caught the other team in the pursuit, so rightfully finalists. -

On Mboma and Masilingi, it strikes me that it would be rare for two teenagers to make a finals in the 200m, let alone for both of them to come from Namibia, even less so for them to be from the same school. Then add the fact that they are both classified as DSD, and my mind struggles to understand the probability of it. Are there any exogneous / environmental factors that would cause DSD?
Different sources contradict on information as well. This NYT articles says they are intersex (46 XY), but other sources seem to contradict.

Ps - no judgment on them from me. I am just trying to understand further.

I have no idea what the village or general location that they’re from is like, but if there’s a reduced or below average gene pool there then it could more likely than it would be for two classmates in a more developed country.

That’s what I thought too but seems a male speed specialist nailed it and qualified top.
Ondra looked to be struggling hard with the heat. -

The 10km open water swim on now is both the stuff of nightmares and awe inspiring. I never knew swimmers had feed stations! Eating while swimming! Mind blown.

There was a sprint finish at the end of a 10km swim in the sea after 2hrs. A fucking sprint finish. Swimming. In the sea!

there must be a way to let him know there's a gap.
It's on the following rider to shout "hold" before the gap grows too big, and the front rider to adjust. Hard to do & be heard when going full pelt. Pretty sure we can hear rider 2 (Laura Kenny?) shout hold here at about 2m32s of the video (3m30 into their round 1 ride) the gap appears about a lap and a half after as the effort blew the line apart.

Edit: Coach can only communicate to the team appx every 15s and can at best get 1 syllable across, which is why they "walk the line" as non-verbal feedback.

It looks like the Dane has now admitted he knew it was the 3rd GB rider ahead, he just didn't know how far ahead he was. Which suggests he knew in advance somebody was there. And that his team mates avoided the crash suggests they all knew, as they rode past because they were looking up, not down. Essentially, the mis judgement was about how slow the GB rider was going coupled with the Dane not looking ahead.
Denmark's Frederik Rodenberg Madsen has explained why he ploughed into Great Britain's Charlie Tanfield during the Olympics team pursuit.
"I was so tired at that point I didn't know if he was 10 or 20 metres away from me""I hope Charlie is okay. It's awful that this happened in an Olympic semi-final."

Anyone know why so many of the female skaters are incredibly young? They range from 12-36y/o but most seem to be under-18. Surely there are fit and skilled 20-somethings that have 10 years of learning tricks over them?

How do you think people get across the Channel in cold water without fuelling? I know people who’ve taken over 20 hrs to cross, that’s a heavy required food intake. I also know of a Japanese swimmer whose food stops involved treading water eating bowls of noodles - with chopsticks!

Also:
"Honestly I didn't know. I knew that there was someone half lap before I hit him. I knew that there was a GB guy. I didn't know if he was the third man or the fourth one, or first or second man. Suddenly he was just in front of me and I couldn't react. It's just a shame and again I hope Charlie is OK."
The lead climbing is great
