  • It's true that £749 for a full Chorus 12sp is pretty good, but it's also one of those "out of stock" prices, that always seem to increase when back in stock.

  • If I recall correctly, Potenza uses a different spring tension in the rear derailleur, so although that setup will work in the short term, the imbalance between spring tensions in the derailleur and the shifter will cause drift over the long term and require constant adjustment.

  • I’ve managed to buy a group for less than that by ordering from different places. Granted, I’m in the U.S., but historically Campagnolo is more expensive here anyway. Think I paid a hair over $1k.

  • Also. Don’t you have to pay tax on imports from Europe now?

  • Nope, l have to pay tax on imports from the UK now... ;)

  • That you didn't have to pay on the Surly CC you posted to me few years ago... ;)

  • Ah - you're in France. I remember. Lol. Pretty sure most of us talking about groupset prices over the last page aren't even in the UK.

  • Thank you so much for so generous a response. Looks like I’ll stick to 11-29 then and try and find a second hand compact chainset then!

  • You’re in the nice position of having an abundance of 11sp rings at your disposal. If you feel really overheated, you may find sub compact (I.e 48/32) works for you. Not sure where you live but I live in a valley between sizable hills and actual mountains - there’s only one descent I spin out on in the area. Lots of people think they’ll be under geared with sub compact but I don’t think most will be. And you’d have the benefit of almost 1-1 gearing.

  • I don’t think this is the case as in both cases I have the older five arm ultra torque chainsets so the bcd isn’t the same. Seems like I either have to find a compact second hand chainset in the five arm design or purchase a newer four arm design that I can then run different sized rings on

  • Well, you said you could look out for a compact chainset, so you can also look out for subcompact. I said that based on the assumption that you’d be replacing the entire crankset and rings. If you have a clamp on front derailleur that you can move wherever you want on the frame (or a braze on with enough vertical adjustment), you can use whatever size rings you’d like.

You don’t have to use Campagnolo cranks.

And I wouldn’t recommend using 12 sp cranks with 11 sp everything else, unless it’s HO Potenza. The chain line will not be the same and shifting will never be as good as it could be.

  • I wasn’t being sassy in my response by the way! Appreciated your insight, and will look out for what comes up, in the meanwhile I’ll just keep pedalling squares when up in the Lake District :)

  • I know - nor was I - sorry if it came across that way. But yeah - I’m a big advocate of appropriate gearing and pedaling squares just ain’t it :-) nor is standing up an entire climb because you’re overgeared!

  • Brought these mismatched centaur 10spd shifters to replace my old 2007 ones, which lbs said were knackered, whilst I waited for some chorus or record ones to come up as they are able to be serviced.

I’ve been told one is powershift and one is ultrashift, anyone know which is which and/or what year?

  • I have the bottom style from a ultra torque centaur group set. Think they were from 2010.

  • Did ultrashift or ultratorque, come before or after powershift?
Read somewhere online that the switch to powershift pissed campag users off? But I could be getting my versions/terms mixed up..

  • Your left lever is 2009-2010 Ultra-Shift, while your right lever is 2011-2014 Power-Shift. Power-Shift was introduced in 2011 but only in the lower lines (Athena 11, Centaur 10, Veloce 10).

  • Thanks for that. Much appreciated.
At least when I put them up in the bay, I’ll know that the listing is correct..

I’m assuming the ultra shift is the more desirable of the levers..

  • Does anybody want a power torque bearing puller? @Chak very kindly gave it to me but I have no use as I’ve stuck with UT chainsets. Would rather it gets put to use. DM if of interest, I’m located E14

  • Can you not also use it to remove UT bearings from the crank spindle?

  • If so and you’d post (would cover cost and forum donation) I’d give this a good home.
    Oops, meant @ghostface lol

  • I've managed to get hold of a 12 speed chain and it does seems fit on a 10 speed chainset.

I'm going to slowly pick up all the groupset parts except the chainset and see how well they work together. may take a while...

  • The chainline is different between 10/11sp and HO 11sp/12sp.

The chain will fit but it might not engage as well as it should on chainrings and jockey wheels, as @MementoMori said.

Whatever changes you make, mixing 11sp and 12sp Campagnolo will work. Initially, anyway. But shifting will get worse over time. Ask me how I know. With the exception of the front der. You can happily use an 11sp front der with 12sp shifters. But the rear der and shifters would obviously need to be changed at the same time.

  • interesting that you think 11s FD will work. I'll give it a go (eventually). shifters are the main expense and I'll probably shell out for new ones since I don't have any experience working with hydraulic brakes but hopefully I can pick up a rear mech fairly cheaply (already got cassette and chain).

I've just bought an almost new bike with perfectly good 105 on it so there is no hurry and I need to stop spending.

  • Yeah, it'll work. Has the same number of indexing points. With that said - might as well go the whole hog. The front shifting on 12sp is wonderful. Disclaimer: I've never used 11sp Campag.
