  • Right, so she's lost interest in the roof rack after seeing the high boot racks. Any opinions on this? THINK I can get Thule through work. Gotta check tomorrow.

Also dude, just skip to the end, get a motorbike, and join us.

  • Sorry, never had one - always thought the Saris one looked nice.

  • Does that kind of ‘driving’ really exist 99% of the time though?

No. That's why I sold the Porsche and got a big comfy estate with a warp speed option.

  • Word. The enlightened choice.

  • Proper driving could still exist if we didn't get sucked into the power obsession. I know, I know... It's what all Honda drivers say... "It handles well tho"

I do love a fast "iron fist, velvet glove" estate car but everytime I get in my underpowered, analogue everything and slightly unsafe chassis dynamics Peugeot 306 I'm reminded that you can enjoy a mundane drive to the shops at normal speed if you are actively engaged in the process of driving.

  • My old, small, not very powerful 911 feels like it's doing 60 at 30, the E63 feels like it's doing 30 at 90.

  • Alignment done, new dash lights fitted, and the original tape player repaired. I'll attempt to fit the new headliner later today, and then I think it'll be more or less finished.

    So much fun driving this.

  • Absolutely cool.

  • What a beaut! Don't envy fitting a new headlining, did one on an 8v I had years ago and the foamy backing material is ultra fragile..

  • Now this is a drivers car. IMO.

  • Ok, vans. Brommers can look away now.

T6.1 Kombi specifically, converted by CJL Leisure with a pop-top, sealed rear bulkhead, water tank for a pressure washer etc.

They offer two styling options, Raceline or Offroad, neither of which really do it for me tbh.

I'd prefer an OEM+ sort of look, but I'm not really familiar with Transporters so unsure what to ask for. Thoughts?

The other question is do I want FWD or 4Motion?

  • Go steel wheels, under the radar.

  • A bit ratty but I like my Neighbours Scirocco gtx. Seem to remember @furious_tiles having one.

  • In a car update. Went to test drive a shogun. Liked it but wife prefers estate, and as its for her. Now I've found outback 3.0r a D5 xc70. I think the xc70 is the head choice, as the fuel on the outback might be annoying.
So think xc70. Do like volvos and sure will be as good with decent tyres, plus comfier for long hauls, which is what it will do.

  • Can’t really offer much useful other that my company Passat 4motion seems to offer 100% identcal handling to the previous standard fwd Passat I had. I think you’d only notice it if you loose traction, apart from the odd exuberant acceleration in frost, never happens to me.

  • i've had 4 Mk2s over the years... a 1.3, a 16v, a g60 (that i imported from Germany) and a show pony 2.0 16v abf.... man i wish i still had them all :(

    see show pony below:

  • That scirocco is awesome.
Made me all misty eyed about the two Sud Sprints I had .
Except all the VW's haven't dissolved.

  • Isn't that the surveillance van?

  • I like these style steel wheels, not sure what they are called

  • The other question is do I want FWD or 4Motion?

Zero experience but as it's the Internet I'll throw my 2¢ in anyway:

Wouldn't AWD be useful for things like muddy fields? I mean if you're going to be camping in the British Isles you're it's going to rain.

    Any pictures?

  • Yep, green mkII.

Was stolen in Woodgreen in 2007/8, only had 70K on it at the time😢

  • The other question is do I want FWD or 4Motion?

No direct experience so take with a pinch of salt...

4Motion is heavier, more expensive, more bits to go wrong... if you're running summer/all-season tyres is it going to make that much of a difference on low-grip surfaces vs fwd? will the conversion add loads of weight over the rear axle? if so, theoretically fwd might struggle with traction in particularly slippery conditions.

Personally I think 4Motion is excessive unless you're regularly going to find yourself in mud/snow and will have tyres to match. If the worst you'll come across is boggy campsite and muddy trail centre car parks fwd will be just fine.
