Not sure, I know in other sports (MMA and kick boxing) I have watched from Japan the crowd are pretty silent anyway and just politely clap at the correct moments but has to make a difference.
The Japanese gymnast just crashed out on the bars and no doubt that would of been a big response if a home crowd was present.
I wonder how much of a difference it makes to the athletes to have a mostly silent empty stadium rather than a capacity crowd cheering you on in the events?
I just finished reading Victoria Pendleton's book, and she made a lot of references to hearing the crowd during the track events, both positively and negatively IIRC.
