• Hey @Steadycam, fancy meeting us at Dorking, ride the first part? Or we could rendezvous somewhere along the route…

  • I’m in Luton on the 31st with family, so a 1st Aug ride out is unlikely! But I hope it all goes [sunglasses] swimmingly : )

  • I might be up for the swim ride. It's a few days after I do the King Alfred's Way so I may be really jazzed on cycling and want more or I may be in a foul mood and not want to see a bicycle let alone ride one.

  • Haha yeah, welcome if Jazzed, grumpy Sparky is requested to stay home. Thanks for the tip on the ‘great pond’.

  • Always happy to help. I haven't been able to find a way to get it to ignore a footpath though. If you can make it do that, all power to you.
Send me a link to your draft route and let's see what comes up.
After last week's ride, I might pack secateurs on the bike!

  • I'm up for this unless we get a biblical downpour. Bike is still caked in mud/shit from doing King Alfred's Way in May so this gives me yet another excuse to delay cleaning it.

If a kind soul could add me to the list (on mobile atm, will only cock it up) that would be fab :)

  • I might pack secateurs on the bike!

    This is an amazing idea

Wait so you want it to ignore footpaths but it isn’t? OK so loads of my route will be footpaths. Alright.

Think I might see what komoot does with generating a route.

  • DORKING ABOUT IN A POND
Ride, swim & ride. Dorking > Frensham Great Lake, Sunday AUG 1st 2021
Ride with minimal road sections. Think about tyres. Think about nettles. Think mud if there's been rain. Think about a nice swim in a lake. Think about a picnic.

FROM: Dorking Station (main) start 0915hrs. We will co-odinate trains so none are too swamped, will aim at 2riders ish per train. More local riders welcome to meet at the start of course. Might be able to bend the rules in the morning with nice guards. Will delay start for later arrivals if there are problems with travel.

Bring picnics, flasks of tea or a couple of beers, even a stove to cook things? Let's make this a proper chilled outing. Easy pace. Slow, even. Aiming to get back to Dorking for maybe a cuppa or pint + return trains late afternoon ...

  • Yep sounds good.

Hit me up when you get a route, i'm turning into a bit of a RWGPS nerd so it'd be interesting to give it a look over and possibly add some local knowledge.

  • what if I:

    cant swim
    ride to dorking

    ?

  • Yes! Hey, go ahead do some plotting, I have a bad habit of riding (on my own) with no actual route and see what happens… might not be great for a group

  • I’m sure there are shallow bits for fooling around without needing to swim.

edit: Or just have a rest while others swim. Whaddya want from me?!

Ride to dorking, sure do it!

  • 2nd you on the can’t swim side of things, or more flailing around in the water

  • interesting okay, theres a decent ride on NDW from Kent bridleways to Dorking, will put myself on the list once I am sure I can make it :)

    what are the timings like?

  • @Skülly great work on this all so far, sorry I haven’t been any more help. Looks like it’s panning out to be a belter of a ride though!

  • Ooh, very tempting. We might drive (we do have a bike trailer which has had a lot of use, but is not much fun for the tow-er on rough ground (the tow-ee can’t yet express any views). Will do a bit of research and confirm. Thanks for thinking of me!

  • @Skülly, the first part of your route is my regular toute out past Dorking, that should pose no problems and I've done loads of exploration out that way. Let me check on Strava and see what the routes I've used look like.
I suspect there's some pretty gnarly routes between Gomshall and Bramley as that region is riddled with bridlepaths, sunken lanes and the like. It's hilly as fuck, so great fun if you like chucking your bike down loose descents.
Godalming to Milford looks pretty straightforward and then an almost entirely off-road route to the lake and a chance to cool off the nettle and bramble rash in the lake.
If anyone has an appetite for an early start and a bit of a faster pace early on, we could leave from Kent Gate at about 6am and still catch up with the Skully train en route.

  • Some ideas here.

  • Loving this Alex, thanks a lot.

Yes by all means ride the whole way, sounds like Amey might be up for that too.

  • I’m happy to jump on the train and bring a few beers with me ;)

  • Up for it
