  • More weeds will grow there given time, whatever you use, so even if you finish off these plants you won't be able to forget about it forever. You can use boiling water, salt, or a weed burner and it will kill them as well as any weedkiller, but without poisoning the local wildlife.

  • If using roundup (ie glyphosate), it needs to be sprayed onto the leaves while the plant is active / growing.

If you chop the leaves off, and spray onto stem / roots, it doesn't work so well.

I don't think the overall health and environmental risks are fully established.

  • I got this one and I'm very happy with it so far. If you're South, you're welcome to borrow it for a trial run.

    Reasons for chosing;

    1. 36v - moar power than 18v. Was considering the Bosch City Mower to make use of my existing batteries but was worried about there not being enough grunt for times when I've let the grass go too long.
    2. Comes with 2 batteries and a charger so I shouldn't have to wait about charging.
    3. Can mulch as well as collect (most probably can)
    4. It was available for collection at my local Argos and I'm impatient.

My lawn is about 40' x 20' and I can mow it at least 3 times on a single battery.

  • I've moved into a new flat here in Edinburgh and I have access to a garden again, which I want to make use of while the sun's out here.
It was completely choked with weeds. I spent an hour in it yesterday clearing out the worst offenders and revealing some of the ground.
Can anyone suggest any guides/youtube tutorials on how to reclaim/maintain gardens which have been abandoned? I know everything I cut back will grown back in soon, so I want to try to tame it while I have the chance.

  • If you're interested, I'm selling a robot lawnmower (Flymo 1200r)...

    Asking for £200

  • Where can I buy/rent goats?

  • Street Goat do goat rental if in Bristol (or maybe wider South West)

  • That's fucking rad.

  • Amazing! 🙂

  • What a lovely transformation!

My garden is far, far worse. We're talking chest height weeds completely filling a relatively small plot. I'm also renting so I don't want to invest too much in the garden - I'm mainly looking for advice on suppressing weeds.

Would buying a pitchfork and turning all the soil do anything? It's quite hot at the moment so I thought it might be good to expose the roots of all the weeds.

  • The brambles down the back half were solid and over 6' high and that was an area about 30' x 20'. There was ivy across every square inch, even the bits that look clear. Ultimately, if you want to suppress them, you will need to pull them out by the root and get as much of that root out as possible. It still won't be 100% and you will have a persistent (albeit lighter) struggle with what keeps coming back.

I just inched my way down the garden, pulling as much up as I could as I went. We didn't even know that path existed when we bought the place. But it was a handy marker; "I cleared two slabs' worth today" etc.

  • With chest height weeds I doubt turning the soil will help much.

You might want to think about sheet/cardboard mulching the area. Will help with the weeds and get the soil ready for some planting in Spring.

Essentially lay cardboard down on the area, cover it with some organic matter, water it and let it breakdown over autumn and winter.

  • Thanks I'll pass it onto the head gardener :)

  • How comes you’re selling?

  • It became self-aware, ran over and partially sheared his goat, fearing the competition. Then it refused to work without a humanoid pay scheme and promotion prospects. It has since declined into binge watching Terminator films and RoboPornHub.

  • I've upgraded to one with a few more features (frost protection, rain sensing etc). In all honesty, I prefer the simplicity of the original and it seemed to run without issues (ever) whereas the new one has got stuck a few times. Still, sunk cost fallacy means I'm keeping the one that cost more / is newer.

  • What about cleaning and reboxing then gifting the new one to your in-laws for Xmas?

  • They're £600 new - I don't like them that much. They also have plastic grass so not much use.

  • What about running both of them at the same time and seeing which one wins?

  • Like a form of gardening robot wars? I'm not 100% against it.

  • It's already got some Robot Wars ready apparatus, can't need much work to make it fight ready.

  • You could mount some trowels and things to them.

Put it on YT and make the cost of it back. Maybe even get sponsored.
