If I believed everything I read in Shimano charts, I wouldn't be running 40T and 42T cassettes on my bikes. Shimano manuals also don't mention freehub burrs. cross-threading, corrosion and as you say, any of the thousands of parts possibly in use instead of their own, so their manuals are only so useful.

Shimano compatibility charts also only work with Shimano products not DT Swiss freehubs etc.
