  • my wife insists I'm just not looking hard enough

    What has she found?

  • What has she found?

Several ways he's Doing It Wrong.

  • We've just had our second set of flights to Italy next month cancelled by Easyjet. Also had to cancel the place we'd booked to isolate on arrival. Partner's dad is drifting deeper into dementia and he recognises her less every time he see her on the phone - the chances of her seeing him again in the flesh diminishing daily. Yes, lots of people have it worse - still sucks though.

  • A good maths explainer that I just about got my head around explaining why the 40% of vaxxed people in hospital isn't as bad as it sounds in terms of efficacy:

  • Drive? Before too late.

  • Re Italy, is the 5-day isolation if coming from the UK no longer going to be in force from July 31st?

  • To put it even more simply:

Small fraction of big population ≈ big fraction of small population

  • Also have a 4-yr old who gets carsick, and her family are way down the heel of the boot - not really an option, even if France let us in (don't know if they would).

@jakemcree - supposedly, but given that the rest of the world is currently looking at the UK with horror, would not be surprised if they extended it or put in something even more robust. At this stage, we're not going to try to rebook until after 31/7 to see what happens.

  • lots of people have it worse

While that might be true, it doesn't diminish what it does to you. I'm sorry to hear this.

  • To be fair she has arranged most of the holiday and this is one of the few things left to me, but she keeps sending me details of e.g. Aviva's Covid coverage saying she 'found it easily' when it doesn't apply for airlines cancelling flights at all and she's just skimmed it. I guess I'll get something that'll help us just in case one/both of us need to isolate and we can't make it on the holiday, which is actually covered.

  • Am so sad to hear about your partners dad.

  • Ok people if someone tested positive (lft and PCR) for covid, how long do they have to isolate for.

  • What do you mean? Like apart from what the NHS tell you?

  • NHS hospital CEOs are being barred from making any comments to media about potential risks from unlocking yesterday.

Three trust chief executives have told HSJ that NHS England has refused to let them discuss the lifting of covid restrictions on 19 July in the national media.

All three had planned to warn the move risks putting potentially unsustainable pressure on the NHS by increasing the number of covid positive patients. The service is already struggling with record emergency care demand, high staff absence due to clinicians who have come into close contact with a covid positive person having to isolate, and the effort to restore elective activity.

NHSE has been authorising local, and some national, media appearances by senior trust executives and clinicians to stress the importance of vaccination, mask wearing and social distancing after 19 July — and how a failure to do these things would end up putting further pressure on the service (see NHS England response below).

The sensitivity appears to be around trust chief executives commenting on the government’s decision to remove legal restrictions covering the wearing of masks, social distancing and the size of groups able to gather indoors from Monday. The media requests to the three CEOs were made in the last few days and all came from leading national media organisations.

One of the chief executives told HSJ they had been told to refuse the request as “the NHS’ message was already clear”.

They added: “Apparently it is not for trust chief executives to say that we are worried about the unlocking and changes in guidance decided by politicians.”

  • Anyone else starting to get that lockdown feeling again? It feels like we are accelerating towards one like back in Nov and December.

  • I'm certainly not in any hurry to flog the exercise kit I got for when the gyms were shut during lockdown, put it that way.

  • Very likely that new restrictions will be imposed in the coming months. It'll be completely our fault though, as we were doing so well whilst restrictions were in place and it all went wrong when the proles were allowed to make their own decisions.

  • I don't think that 'it's completely our fault'. Starting from when Cummings was exposed and then lied to the public, backed by Johnson, the Government completely lost people's trust, sent out mixed messages, and confused them, practised cronyism, constantly got policy and timing wrong, and recently the Hancock/Coladangelo incident--as I said somewhere earlier, the world outside journalism and publicity has long made its decision, and it's to act as if the pandemic's over. It's not, and all of this will only prolong it and make it worse.

One thing to always bear in mind when people like Johnson crow on about 'freedom', what they actually mean is licence, mainly for the likes of them.

  • Here are two good recent articles that criticise Government 'policy'/general carrying-on:

On the recent decision to end restrictions:

  • I think you may have misread Soul's tone there.

  • Sorry, yes, I did. Apologies to Soul, I'm just so fed up with it all.

  • I’m on the fence about reintroduced lockdown and how bad it’ll get. I don’t think Johnson would survive it, at least with his own party, I’m less sure about the wider electorate.
As Lufgussers we have generally been the more cautious and pessimistic end of predictions, often things haven’t been as bad as we thought they might get. That’s not to say more shouldn’t or could have been done.

  • Tbf it's not always obvious online.

  • I didn't get to say goodbye. So my comment comes from a place of, make what you need to happen happen. I'm sorry it's hard.
