That's awful. Why the fuck was her employer not all over this shit the second it sounded like it was going to cause the employees issues? I can't imagine the care home industry doesn't have a lot of non-UK born folks on it's books.
Rhetorical question, I know most large employers couldn't care less. I feel very privileged that mine was not one of them. Even though I personally am not at risk, access to legal advice and information was made available ages ago.
