  • Something not quite right here. Was sitting in the car, looked down and saw my HR was 245 bpm!

  • Electrical interference always did that to my Polar. Especially in Melbourne, crossing tram tracks. I just knew when I saw 230s in random files it was electrical.

  • Run any updates for the Garmin?

The previous OS (only released a couple of weeks ago I think) is buggy (mostly dropouts reported) with HRMs and maybe some PMs. Garmin have released an update.

  • I get similar in two different scenarios:-
    a) near a bus terminus on Danebury Avenue by Richmond Park (I suspect some electrical nonsense near there)
    b) sometimes when I take off the heart rate strap (HRM-Tri) after an activity so I guess it can happen with dodgy connectivity to the chest

Most of the rest of the time it is sensible.

  • I reckon it's all of the above. I was in the car going passed a building site so there could have been some electrical stuff going on. I'd also just taken the HRM strap off a few mins prior and I'm not sure when I last updated the app!

  • I smashed up my screen last week on my Garmin 235. No problems so far but do you think the waterproofness has gone? Or is the glass screen not integral to the waterproofness?

  • Hi Garmin fans, I have some very basic questions. Hopefully this is the right place to ask.

I'm going away cycling for a couple of weeks and spent part of the weekend creating some fun-looking routes on Strava. Never done this before, and now unclear how to actually follow them.

From reading this thread, it seems like Ride With GPS is good for this, although I am aware that Strava has a navigation feature (very little on their site about this. Ideally, I would like to be able to easily follow the routes I have made, along with HR/average speed/distance. I have an iPhone, and would prefer not to buy a Garmin etc, but open to that if real benefits.

Is the easiest workflow to download the routes from Strava and use them in Ride With GPS?

    Thanks.

  • I would use an offline app such as OSMAND, load the gpx files into it and then you can get directions without needing mobile data only a gps signal.

Offline meaning that you download the maps of the area that you need.

    https://osmand.net/

You can use it in dumb mode where it shows your position and the gpx track on a map, this is more battery friendly

    or actively giving directions

  • Thank you. That looks great and exactly what I need - especially as I will be out of my home country and data will be pricey.

One negative though is that OSMAND doesn't appear to be able to show HR. Dt you know of anything similar that can?

  • do you want navigation or monitoring??

OSMAND is really a navigation app not a bike computer app, does your device support ant+ as well as bluetooth, is your HR monitor bluetooth or ant+.

depending on your answer as to which app will be suitable,

  • I want both ideally - navigation, but with some basic monitoring on show. Seems to be a feature that others have requested on OSMAND.

My HRM is ant+/Bluetooth, but iPhone is only Bluetooth.

On a related note, it is unclear to me from online resources whether hardware like the Garmin edge can show nav and things like HR at the same time.

  • with the edge series you have a series of screens, you can show data fields on the map page, you can choose what data fields to display

  • If you are navigating a course, the Garmin will beep and flash up turn prompts and a map of the junction even if you are displaying a data-only screen. Assume same for Wahoo, etc.

  • As an Android user I would suggest Ipbike but for IOS .??????

  • Both good replies and the answers I was struggling to find. Will take a look at some Garmins.. Thanks.

Ride with GPS can do all of this BTW - well worth the basic subscription and it's monthly too in case you don't like it.

You can attach bluetooth HRM, speed sensors etc.

  • Is there a way to load TrainerRoad workouts onto a Garmin 530? If so, how?

  • Doesn't the TR app send them to Garmins?

    Yeah: https://www.trainerroad.com/blog/garmin-edge-the-best-head-unit-setup/

When I tried it, I synced TR with Garmin Connect and then when you plugged the head unit it, it would sync the workouts to the Garmin. https://connect.garmin.com

  • Sorry I missed this. Rwgpa will do what you want. You can plan your routes on the computer, then buy a months app subscription for your trip. If you can live without HR then osmand as said above. Dont waste time with garmin.

  • Thanks, looks complex, as expected. I think I did all the steps right, but still can't access the workouts from within the unit, and it will only show me the scheduled one for the day.

I will try import a few as .fit files and see if that places them in the workout tab

  • Are you sure you're 'starting' the workout on the unit?

Do you have scheduled workouts in TR? Are they appearing in Garmin Connect?
Do you see any workouts in the folder on the Garmin itself?

  • Yes, they are scheduled in TR.
Yes, they do come up as workouts in Connect.

They do not come up as workouts in the unit, but I found them in the "training plans" page and can load them from there.. I guess loading them as .fit files will show them up in the workout tab? Will try later

  • Does anybody know a shop that sells or replaces Garmin batteries in London? Looking for a replacement for an Edge 820 on short notice.

  • Considering getting a Garmin for my longer cycles. Stopping to check Google maps all the time is starting to do my head in. I already have a Garmin 745 watch.
Any recommendations as to which bike computer to go for?
