Get the estwing fireside friend. There is a pretty version with a natural handle or the blue rubberised handle version.

Think I've found the tool for the job, Husqvarna small splitting axe... This and a mallet should take care of any log... Thanks for all the advice, people... Now to shop around for a chopping axe/hatchet!
