Steam Deck seems kinda fun if you have a big steam library?

Looks promising for sure, surprised it's taken so long for something like this to take off (I know Razer did something similar a while back). Out of all the hardware I've ever owned, most of my PC-gaming was probably done on my little Surface Pro 2 as a psuedo-handheld.
Should be decent enough spec for me if they're targeting AAA performance too. Will be interesting if it's locked to Steam or you can install games however you want on it.

Having very regretfully bought a Steam controller I'll take a lot of convincing before trusting them with hardware again.

I generally take that approach when it comes to hardware regardless to be honest. But it looks pretty promising. As it's basically just a PC you can run SteamOS on it, or Windows if you prefer. Valve seem to have some fancy software that allows you to run Windows games on SteamOS so that'd be interesting to see. Also not at all locked down for Steam only games, you can run whatever games you want on it, just like a regular PC.
I guess the primary issues are the relatively limited storage size (given the size of games these days, the 64/256/512 GB drive sizes won't take long to fill up) and as always with these sorts of project, the battery life. Apparently between 2-8 hours (from resource hungry gaming to standard web browsing).
Won't be rushing out to buy one later this year, but hope it's a form factor that takes off with other hardware manufacturers following suit. I'm sure Microsoft won't be too far behind if it's a success.

Microsoft are more interested in XCloud than on mobile hardware. They would prefer to have xbox games work well on iPads / android devices etc as well as Apple TV and smart TVs than make their own piece of mobile hardware.

I'm really excited for it as I don't have a PC for gaming and haven't done for many years now - looks like something I could get into

Been playing a shit load of crosscode since isolating and now my foot going weird so I can't go to work. I'm right at the endgame but have been hoovering up some quests and grinding some gear, I've literally stood outside the last mission door but didn't go in. Mid large exp combo it's just left gamepass, I'm kinda gutted, not sure I can spend £16 extra this month for a few more hours.

Microsoft are interested in making money. If there's an opportunity to make a load of money out of building a handheld that'll run PC games, I can't imagine they'd just turn away. I'm sure their experience with developing the Surface range would come in handy too.

The Surface I think was mostly there to demonstrate that you could make a not shit looking Windows laptop and try to nudge the main manufacturers to up their game. I don't imagine they've actually made anything particularly significant from the hardware itself.
Far more lucrative to get people onto Xbox Game Pass subscriptions and cloud gaming. Let Apple/Intel/AMD/Nvidia worry about the hardware and just make sure that their stuff runs well on all of it.

Probably also to take advantage of being able to have full control over the hardware & software side of things, which I reckon is probably one of the main reasons that (IMO) Apple laptops are (well, were) a league above the equivalent HP/Dell/whatever.
My thoughts were more around the thermal management side of things that I imagine was a much bigger design challenge to put a proper workstation into a tablet instead of a traditional laptop. Which is likely going to be a primary concern for a PC in a handheld games console form factor.
Was not suggesting Microsoft get into C/GPU manufacturing for the sake of a handheld.

To be fair the surface is already a pretty good game system from what I’ve found with it. I have an old surface pro 3 from 2014 which I use when travelling. On the train right now and I remembered to install Grim Fandango from game pass last night. With my Xbox controller connected it’s playing amazingly. Have pushed it to play Mass Effect 2 comfortably in the past, had tried to install Elder Scrolls Oblivion last night but windows update kicked in to stop it downloading fully. Did a quick little test of the cloud system through game pass when in the station at kings cross and it worked but was laggy. Not sure if that was just cos I was tethering on my phone 4G. Will test some stuff when I’m at my parents with their full fibre internet.

Yeah my SP2 was ridiculous for the form factor. Played through both GTAV and MGSV on that little thing!

Came across Wildermyth on Steam recently. XCOM-style tactical RPG, just out of early-access. It's very good.

Looking forward to this dropping on Switch. Bit confused as to why it's not coming to Switch until 2022 though. Given that it's available on Apple Arcade I'm guessing it's a timed exclusivity thing. Sucks if that's the case, but understandable for a small team.

They do a good job of crafting stories from a set of reusable components. And when you think you've learned the patterns, they change the rules on you. Won't say more for the risk of spoilers beyond that some of the tricks they pull have more effect if you engage with the narrative. But then if you're not the kind of person who is attracted to the narrative, the game probably isn't for you.
I agree with the reviews that say it's surprising how much you can find you have invested in the characters. For which reason, choosing the "carved in stone" option is a risk that I'd recommend you leave until you've played a few stories all the way through.

Anyone watch Twitch Rivals yesterday?
Was quit funny seeing a bunch of people that are normally roaming all round the map wiping people out have to change tactics and camp the same building for most of the match, waiting for the circle to close!

replaying god of war on new game+
I just got to the bit where you get his swordchuks in the story but with NG+ have had them all game already... and fucking hell, it's been so much better. it now feels like a really weird decision for them to lock them away for over half the game.
having everything unlocked has made it much more arcade-style smash the shit out of everything and feel totally god-like as well which feels like should be the default in a game where you are a god, instead of just doing strong things in cut scenes
still took me 5 goes to kill my first valkyrie though *grumble*

Got myself a series x, hurray!
Now to start the task of downloading huge games!
Anyone played FFXIV MMO on playstation?
Seems to be getting quite a bit of hype from wow migrants at the moment which has piqued my interest.
