  • They should have had a gun.

    Edit: SNAP!

  • Everyone knows you just use your foot to asphyxiate them.
If you haven’t you need to search out the video.

  • Someone near my mother in law's house has moved in recently and has a Bengal cat. It is terrorising the local cats. It got into her neighbour's house and attacked her cat which had to have stitches. It looks really nice though!

  • They’re also the size of an adult human. Went to a game preserve/hunting ranch in the States, owner had a stuffed puma in a pouncing pose that was like 6ft tall.

Pumas are ambush predators, which is why the puma wasn’t comfortable with just ripping into the guy in the video. A sow bear would’ve been a different story. Chap should’ve walked away quietly, sideways so he could see where he was going and where the puma would come from. Also should’ve grabbed two rocks, but preemptively attacking a predator defending its multiple young probably won’t turn out well.

  • Possible QI style klaxon trigger.
Aren’t polar bears the only animal that actively hunts humans?

  • dunno, my cat definitely actively hunts humans

  • Depends on the definition of actively hunt.

Polar bears, Komodo dragons, jaguars all proactively track and hunt humans. Wolves, crocodiles, pumas, hungry grizzlies and Kodiak bears, anacondas may not go far out of their way but will happily hunt a nearby human. I’d include great whites but I feel sympathy for them.

  • /csb alert

When I was working in one of the shops in Belfast Zoo as a student, preparing to open in the morning, we got a call saying to lock ourselves into our various cabins as a lynx had escaped, which we did. But one of the 16-yr old girls working in the cafe at the top of the mountain saw the lynx outside, grabbed a mop, strode out and cornered the thing until the zookeepers arrived. I was in awe of her for the rest of the summer.

  • Holy shit. That'd be terrifying.

  • Aren’t polar bears the only animal that actively hunts humans?

Not quite. The polar bear doesn't know that we are a food source so won't normally bother with the tiny, textile clad creatures it sees far away the on horizon from time to time. But if they come up close and take a bite just to test if we're any good, they will immediately learn that they have found a great source of protein that is much easier to hunt than seals. So from then on they will actively hunt for humans and in Svalbard that means they will find the habitated areas within not too long. This is why the official policy is that a polar bear that has had their first taste of human flesh must be killed immediately.

While on the topic, this tourist is a cunt for not setting up proper security around his tent. The bear that bit him had to die to protect the resident human population.

  • I agree, what a cunt. Don't blame them hunting humans. Our destruction of the planet is making their normal hunting increasingly difficult.

  • English speaking media covered the story well, but focused on the exciting 'into the wilderness' aspect of it. Of the articles I could find just now, all seem to omit that the incident was subject to a police investigation and that the tourist was found culpable and fined for negligence.
The local media has plenty more nuance, often leading with a photo of the dead polar bear pointing out that she was a young female (implying we've lost out on plenty of future cubs).

  • How sad, it is a massive challenge for them to get to adolescence.

  • #csb - A couple of years ago I was in Yellowstone with the family. We went for a hike and picnic and lost the path a bit. We could see the road from the top of the hill so took a direct route back down towards it. Halfway we saw a small crowd beginning to gather with binoculars etc. When we finally got down we asked what they were watching and there was a bear with cubs just off to the side of where we had been walking.
Don't stray from the path is our new family motto.

  • Seeing people who are keeping on whining for being attacked or just stalked from animals in their territory it’s kind of entertaining tough.

  • Yeah I’d read about that. I don’t think it classifies as hunting.
There was a rather limited discussion on Normalisation of Deviant Behaviour on the TCR group thread. It’s certainly and interesting theory if you travel by or to unsafe places.
You’d think the first encounter would be a red flag.

  • None of these memes are cracking me up

  • You'll have to bear with it 🤷
