• Well I've learned:

    • Pumas, cougars, panthers and mountain lions are the same thing
    • I should have been more cautious when hiking in California a few years ago and ignoring signs warning about mountain lion activity. I thought they were lynxes/bobcats or something. The recently well-chewed large dog carcass right by the trailhead might have put me off, but I didn't see it until I returned.
  • They’re also the size of an adult human. Went to a game preserve/hunting ranch in the States, owner had a stuffed puma in a pouncing pose that was like 6ft tall.

    Pumas are ambush predators, which is why the puma wasn’t comfortable with just ripping into the guy in the video. A sow bear would’ve been a different story. Chap should’ve walked away quietly, sideways so he could see where he was going and where the puma would come from. Also should’ve grabbed two rocks, but preemptively attacking a predator defending its multiple young probably won’t turn out well.
