3.0 H6 is good but quite thirsty. Although actually all the outbackās are quite thirsty by modern standards.
H6 is better in someways - timing chain instead of belt and VVT
Head gaskets on a Subaru is an engine out job FYI so it can be a bit more spendy than a conventional inline 4cyl
Had a 3.0 spec B legacy as well, that was a genuinely fast car but the Outback is fast enough for A road overtakes even fully loaded.
Ours averages 28mpg locally doing short runs, 30+ on longer runs.
3.0 was high teens and single figures if gunned.
