Bit of advice sought - discovered my old Venture trucks & a big ol' set of Kryptos from 25 years ago up the loft & naturally stuck them on a longboard for arsing about on, feels unusual - guessing the bushings are either a bit hard or a bit old, probably both. Is it worth trying softer bushings or taking the washer plates out or whatever, or am I best looking for some cheap longboard trucks?

Well that is a result!

[adjusts spectacles] Truck geometry is just one part of how a truck handles and what the overall 'feel' is, so changing from the trad Venture to a longboard/reversed kingpin type of truck will change everything, but still may not suit you (like, I find those types of trucks feel dead unresponsive in a small turn and then tippy when you go large).
If you have access to different bushings it's worth playing with that, definitely. I use a particular type of oversized bushing in my Indy 169s that I feel allows me to run them looser than I would with stock bushings.Edit: I see Sean Goff has NOS packs of these... green stims are where I'd start the tweaking : )

Also. Angled risers and a longer kingpin can change handling. Was just thinking that the Ventures might have a low kingpin which reduces options for taller bushings.

Cool - i'll have a look around for softer bushings & take it from there, any opinions on removing the bushing plate things to loosen things up?
Is that the same Sean Goff of 80's skateboard fame?

same Sean Goff : )
Removing the retaining washer may help but I’m always a bit concerned that the bushing may deform, split or do something else unplanned (completely disintegrate if it’s really old?) during general radness.

Haha, brilliant - just read the bio on his eBay store, was my hero when I was in primary school!
My joints are made of cheese these days so bouts of radness may be few & far between, I've loosened the current bushings off as far as they'll go - from memory the trucks didn't get that much use before being mothballed so hopefully it'll be rideable before I sort some new ones out, ta for the help!

Update - was having a browse on eBay & picked up a pair of Revenge carving / streetsurf trucks which apparently have some weird setup that allows a 3 foot board to turn on a sixpence in a rather unsettling fashion - the seller didn't get on with them & one review I read called them "fucking terrifying" - what could possibly go wrong? 😂

Knew there'd be a skateboarding thread. Posting to follow this, my youngest daughter wanted a skateboard and I've used it as an excuse to try it myself after a >20yr hiatus. Apparently I'm bang in the target demographic for a lot of stuff - middle aged guy wanting what I couldn't afford as a kid. Got a powell peralta for myself and some unknown to me branded thing for the daughter. See if I can't fracture my wrists and ankles before autumn.

I've never skateboarded but I bought a mini cruiser a few weeks back and spent an hour trying to see if there was any crossover from snowboarding, which I've done for a bit. Turns out some, but not as much as I thought. Hopefully the rain'll give up soon and I can get some more practice in.

New trucks arrived - first impressions: interesting... they turn in fairly normally at first like they're set up really soft then suddenly the deck feels like it's at 45 degrees to the ground - ankles don't fail me now 😬

Cheers, they're really nicely finished - hopefully I'll be carving up the streets like a hero & not lying broken in a hedge with teenagers laughing at me like the middle aged walloper I actually am 😂

First time skateboarding in 20 years yesterday. Cruised about for a bit, rode off some curbs, managed a 2 cm ollie. Didn’t die. As @Drakien wrote upthread I expected it to feel more natural than it did as I’ve snowboarded a fair bit but nope, terrifying and weird. Hope to keep at it and hopefully will progress a little bit at least.

Those look really cool, never seen or heard of them. Some kind of progressive steering magic?
Edit: never mind, watched a couple of youtube vids. Clever!

Quite a clever design, single 45 degree pivot around a big chunky proprietary bushing - hopefully my vintage joints can take all the impending radness

I watched that Iberico one over the weekend, it's great.

Keen to try skating again after a very brief effort last year was ended by a fudged knee. Any of the newbie skaters posting here lately local to Sydenham/Crystal Palace?
Is that the Colin Kennedy? 90s pro fae Scotland?
