ZZ Top stuff sounds great!
I’m going the other way with strings. Always played 8s or 9s, but I’ve started putting 10s on my 25.5” guitars, and thinking about 11s for my 24.75”. I’m not bothered with debates about sustain or toan, but I find they help me control my bends better and are more forgiving of my general hamfistedness. I admire your decision to push yourself by going the other way, but I lack the self discipline.
Extra string-chat: I recently tried some of the EB Cobalt Slinkies. They sound great, and (might??) give the extra output and clarity they claim, but probably not worth twice the price of a standard packet.
Just ordered some 9.5 gauge strings to try. I've played 10s for ever but recently been experimenting with 9s which I actually really like for some stuff. Got them on the Tele and they're great for bending. The fact that they make me play a bit more gently is good as well. My tendency to compensate for lack of talent by bashing too hard is tempered a bit by the lighter strings forcing me to ease up.
Pretty sure the SG came with 10s and feels great as is, but I would like to try something lighter to see how it plays. I reckon 9s would feel too flappy so i'm i'm gonna try the mid point with some DR 9.5s from Strings Direct.
