  • Sorry totally disagree there is no skill in grabbing someone’s shirt. The only intention is to cheat.

I wouldn't go as far as cheating. There's no skill to pulling someone's shirt, it might not be in the spirit of the game but it is part of the game. Defenders like Chiellini know exactly what they can and can't get away with; he 100% knew he was going to get a yellow and only a yellow for that and did it anyway, because it was the only way to stop Saka there and then. But he also knows that's it for the game, he can't do another blatant one like that or he's off. If England could have successfully goaded him into another yellow card offense and got him sent off would that also be considered cheating? No, it's football. For better or worse it happens week in and week out.

  • So he knew the punishment was lesser than the alternative? I just don’t see how that can be right.
To me it’s very different from jostling with someone for the same space or other things that might be similarly categorised but just bored of these kinda professional fouls.

  • Aye, the punishment was lesser than the potential alternative, a goal. But where it was on the pitch meant he wasn't denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity. As mentioned upthread, had it been one-on-one with the keeper, he'd have been off.

Isn't that true of pretty much every foul though. It's not a zero sum game.
