Well, if somebody is desperate enough to ask in this thread, then the answer to "How do I do X" is probably "Don't do X" 🙂

Sometimes writing it down is enough to recognize a bad idea, sometimes it additionally needs to be bounced off others to be made plain.

I'd rather wrangle Dad into Central London before he has a drink than after.
But I have taken your advice on leaving the "event dinner" for another time so we are going to one of the don't-scare-the-horses chains. No one will be delighted by their meal but no one will be horrified either so it's a no score draw.
