pursuing a populist agenda at the expense of the disadvantaged
Fully agreed. I’d add at the expense of the UKs international credibility. It’s not donald trump levels of distrust, but it’s really not a good look, especially considering the tens of millions of £ the UK spends on ‘prosperity’ projects abroad, teaching countries about the importance of the rule of law…

Haitian president snuffed. IIRC he had dictatorial/authoritarian tendencies, but his support was still considerable. The everyday situation in Haiti is so dire they won't be able to cope with even a little bit of civil war. This is fucked.

I'm no Philip Sands, but as I understand it, if it's not written into UK law that we will follow that convention, it doesnt matter what the UN says.

What I'm taking from the new Borders bill is that I need to take my passport with me if I go for a swim in the sea in order to prove that I am allowed to be rescued, should I get into trouble.

UK Government position December 2020
The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea – UNCLOS - is a critical part of the rules-based international system. Its provisions apply to 70% of the surface of the globe and form an essential component of global governance.
The United Kingdom is fully committed to upholding its rules and securing the implementation of its rights and obligations. This commitment is a common endeavour of the international community.

We are also signatories and have ratified the Convention in 1997

wtf is the indigenous population
The ones that don't like immigrants. It's a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy, if you're in favour of immigration then in their eyes you're not properly British so what you're saying doesn't count.

Some factions of Serbs not exactly renowned, at least historically, for their racial tolerance either though.

Come on people, it’s Anglo Saxons, innit. Pure Anglo Saxon at that
No problem, my issue isn't really with challenging International Law, the world is a dynamic place and past conventions aren't always appropriate or in a countries sovereign interests. However, this Government seem intent on pursuing a populist agenda at the expense of the disadvantaged and it really pisses me off. Illegal immigration and asylum seekers are such a massive non-issue on the list of issues we have as a nation to be addressing and yet here we are happy to demonise them rather than challenge and educate the electorate.
