  • It’s a 68mm shell and a mtb crank, spacers to widen it

By spinning the torque cap wasn’t on, I mean “does the crank whizz round in the bb and rest at the bottom” when you put the spindle through

It doesn’t, in terms of moving it seems fine? Don’t feel any resistance/ notching

  • Please don’t tell me I have to go back out there, I can’t face it

  • It’s a 68mm shell

why? on an MTB?! I guess not possible to change that equation.

It doesn’t, in terms of moving it seems fine? Don’t feel any resistance/ notching

Should be fine, those cranks can take a lot of abuse, even if there is a minor play you will notice.

  • So far, just fixing things from my own inexperience:

    New Cranks £55

    New chainring £30

    New bb £20

Wheel repair £50+ depending on how bad they are

New chain ring for old cranks £60

    Wrong gear cable £10

    Tools for the build £40

    Hours spent 20-30?

Sanity lost? All of it, every singly bit

Paying a nice bike person and just waiting an extra month before I got to ride it? £200?

I guess I still would have had the crank and chainring issue

  • why? on an MTB?! I guess not possible to change that equation.

I wish I could slap my past self who convinced themselves this was a touring bike

  • ha! Losing it at bike mechanics is similar to trying to get back into shape after a long spell of inactivity, I enjoy both.

  • doesent matter tbh, a wider shell just makes the rear wheel more tukt

  • Well they work,

I also believe they have what the geeks call “a wider Q factor” (this is a fake measurement, it’s not real) and it places my foot in a more natural position (again, choosing to believe this is actually karma for doing the wrenching, the cosmos giving back)

I really hate working on this bike, but it’s just so sweet to ride 😎

When you flick it off a kerb and it just does all the work itself, nice whir of the wheel and a squish of the tyres as it plonks down, so good 😤

Was this part of the inspiration when building Homer??

  • i've gone to check my derranged signal chats to make sure i'm not doing a revisionism here and i can confirm this is a case of spaghetti and the noodle

  • taking bets on if the 2nd, bigger pomp will arrive before moving.

extra bit of excitement about all of this is that it was booked in to be picked up from the seller today, with paisley freight saying they aim to deliver parcels the next day

long term readers will know that no bike has ever been delivered on time across all the builds here.

looking forward to the unique challenge of getting this forwarded onto me or braving the rona train back home to pick it up next week at further expense. a real treat.

  • the stem has not showed up either, so no chance to try out the 29r stridsland homer before i leave, as i will have to take the wheels apart tomorrow for them to be fixed

really a big L for me in the "buying things off facebook marketplace" after the wins of finding these items for a good price.

i knew i should have been a bst cop and not just replied "B)" and left them too it

  • Facebook marketplace is like gumtree for people who use Facebook.

  • Is this still available?

  • i wanna have a go of the homer

  • @gubhi you and me both pal, you and me both…. Soon … soon

The pomp has arrived, it’s nearly unused????! No noticeable brake track wear or brake block, original wheels, seems tight

The front brake cable needs replacing, seems it twisted in transit, maybe a new hanger depending but a pretty great all things considered

Will fix it after work, I imagine I can just replace the cable without faffing with the straddle wire?

  • In the interest of community entertainment, please adjust with the straddle wire and report back

  • might treat myself and just take it to a shop :^)

  • Took it for a spin

Cantis can get in the fucking bin, what a pile of trite???? Absolute death traps, will not be giving them the time of day and will get some v brakes for it, got some old xt levers to use

The little bit of extra cable housing was me joyously/ naively thinking I’d actually use these breaks long term and wanted to use ol ronny romances trick to stop cable run, needs to say will not be needed

Bike fits great tho, love a big bike, will make the handsome city bike when all finished

  • Cantis are the worst thing ever until I get lucky and get them right. Today was that day

What do you reckon of the smart sams?

  • I have only rode them a few hundred meters, they seem alright, It might have been over inflated but didn’t quite seem as plush as a gravel king. I will revisit when I actually get to ride it!

I’ve just overnighted some shimano alvios from wiggle with the gubbins and ripped the cantis off, spent some time putting stickers on and making sure the pump fits

Feeling a bit better about it now

Some nitto city bars, silver seatpost and shorter stem to come, maybe a new chain if I can’t get the life back in this, then it will be done

It’s going to be looking swish!

  • Cantis can get in the fucking bin, what a pile of trite????

When set up well (takes a lot of fiddling), and with proper brake pads (Kool/SwisStop) they can do wonders (=they can slow you down adequately). Although any V-brake will still be better.
Congrats on the bike btw, looks mint!

  • Cantis can get in the fucking bin, what a pile of trite???? Absolute death traps

    Needs disc brakes

  • cantis are fine if you know how to adjust them

deep read zinn and sheldon pls

  • Cantis can get in the fucking bin, what a pile of trite????

If they worked, they'd be called canis.
