Yes. I was using treats and toys. I watch some YouTube videos with Zak and followed his instructions which are similar. He eats and drinks in it too so its his space.
Interesting idea on the toy locked inside!

We let our dog sleep in our room which is really nice, especially when she comes for a cuddle in the morning. The only thing I would say is that due to barely spending any time on her own since she's come to us, even at night, she's now very clingy, especially with my girlfriend who works from home. We're now, having had her for about 7 months, having to work on leaving her alone for a while. We've got a camera to keep an eye on her when we're out and for the first 10 minutes or so she just stands at the patio door and howls
She eventually settles down and is fine but it's not ideal for our neighbors (who are thankfully very fond of Crumpet and very understanding). I think if we'd have the foresight to work on that from when we got her it'd probably be a lot easier for everyone! I know the sleeping situation and separation anxiety aren't necessarily the same thing but I think in our case, Crumpet spending about 24 hours a day in the same room as one of us has made it harder for her to be left alone. -

Yeah wise advice. I think ill get the first week or 2 past and then work on these things once he's settled a bit. Trying to pick my battles and not fight them all at once, which will be a disaster.

This. Super wise approach. Can be pretty overwhelming for all involved if you try to take all this on at once! Toilet training is really the main thing to worry about in the very early days....

• #3031
Yeah definitely! I hope they settle in well, they're super cute. Have you settled on a name other than "Turd Monster"?
-
• #3032
Thanks.
Yes Piri, because dogs need a silly name. Short for Pirineos (Pyrenees in catalan) as he's a Pyrenees Berger, Cocker cross from a working farm. Or Piri for Pirahnah.
The parents.

What’s wrong with Monstruo de las heces as a name?

I really wish I could give as few fucks about rain as Odie does.

Good name!

That's quite a good result though
Yeah, it's fine, the original plan was to crate train him and then get that downstairs with the cats in the dining(bike)room/kitchen but he never got on with it, he'd be ok in the day and would wonder in and out and chill in it a bit, but as soon as you'd leave him alone, even if it was me standing outside the room, or just covering it so he couldn't see me in the room, he'd whine, then bark. We ended up nearly as tired as when having a kid. Current arrangement works fine. He's not the happiest being left alone at home and doesn't get much practice, but has got better with age, used to howl the whole time, now he quietens down in a few minutes and watches people out the window and will always find one bit of paper to tear up but nothing more, I think it's a warning about taking more than a couple of hours.

There's a good facebook group called "Dog Training Advice and Support" that's run by some pro trainers and has loads of resources. They're very much positive reinforcement only and their method for crate sleeping is if the dog is whining sleep next to them and build it up as they get more used to being in the crate and doing crate training so they see it as a positive place.

The puppy book we used sounds similar in approach to this. (Can’t remember the name - I offered it up on this thread a while back though). He was all about positive reinforcement.
With the crate, his approach was to make it a place where treats can always be found and where dog can retreat to if it wants some time out (this was a big thing for us, having 2 young kids - if Odie is in his crate, he’s out of bounds)

thanks, I don't have FB but can get wife to join. Yes, I am all for the positive. Yesterday I got in the crate with him for 10min and just played. It's just going to take time. His bed is in there and his toys, so it's 'his' space.
Said crate

Dogs have strong "den" desire/instinct. We found it helped to put a blanket over Otto's crate to make it feel more snug and safe.

Thanks, a fair idea. It's quite warm here 29C so he might get hot. Also if he can't see us he gets noisy. But worth trying at some point

We put a light blanket over Odie at night but that’s mainly so he can’t see cats and foxes through the kitchen doors. He seems to be able to hear them just fine, still though!

We always put a blanket over it too. Dogs love a den. We regularly find the dog under the clothes airer with sheets on it flat out asleep

We got a big length of vet bed for the bottom of the crate to make it cosier & there's always a blanket over the top for extra den points too - if it's hot how about an old bedsheet?
Mavis sleeps in our room in her crate but is going into the one in the living room less now, at first she'd go straight there if she wanted a nap, but now she tends to just curl up on the couch - I don't know if we should discourage this but if we're going out for an hour or two she seems happy enough in her crate then with a pile of the good treats dotted around.
This has been great for peace of mind too if we're popping out

Yeah a camera will be something to get for sure.
I actually shut the crate, he started to wee in there so I thought I'd deal with that habit and then go back to crate once he's going outside consistently. Not sure why he started to go in the crate - door open hed walk in there, happened twice. My fault for not paying close attention. But he woke me in the night and went outside happily so should be okay soon.

It's a bit distant in memory terms but I think the crate training process we followed advised only allowing your puppy into the crate after they had been toileted.

when we were training our dog on separation anxiety, I had setup where I could set my laptop to always on, position it so I could see all of the room from the facetime camera and then skype in via my phone to see/hear what was going on with the dog. saved having to buy a camera

I've got a Eufy 2k camera, does the job, streams to an app and records on an sd card, does sound and no monthly cost.
Ours peed in the crate at first but usually only after she just woke up so we had to get her outside quick after waking her up. Roughly our crate training method was the usual throwing treats in there in the day time but in the evening we let her go to sleep on the sofa then carried her in to it, once she was more comfortable going to sleep in there we trained her to go in by herself.

Getting a puppycam proved expensive - the poor lad looked so lonely and miserable when we were out that we have to get another dog to keep him company. No regrets.

Our trainer said to leave the door shut with a high value toy inside so that they dog can see it and wants to be in there with the toy.
Like Stonehedge says, it might time. Sounds like him sleeping on the floor by the bed is a pretty good outcome anyway.
