We stayed in the Hydro Hotel for our second week and whilst the building and the grounds are impressive it was enormously overpriced for what you got - £229 per night and you got a breakfast of such low quality that it was actually difficult to take seriously.
Interesting about the hydro, my friends got married at the Kingshouse Hotel in glencoe four weeks ago.
The overall quality and experience of the hotel was absolutely appalling considering what it it cost per night. Like wise the breakfast in the morning was very poor. I've had better in hotels costing significantly less.
I hadn't realise the Kingshouse is under the same ownership as the Crieff and Peebles hydro etc.
It was so bad it put me off using the Peebles hydro if the standard of service is similar there. Considered staying there to combine my wife's birthday and try get a day on the uplift but won't be after the experience at the Kingshouse. The Peebles area really does have some of the best riding in the UK. We considered moving there before having kids but it's only an hour or so away from me now.
Glad you got the sun out. It's only sunny until it isn't.
Keeping to the glentress trails for F was a good call. Most of the inners side wouldn't be enjoyable for a beginner. -
Just caught up on this, you got lucky with the weather!
August in Innerleithen is actually the second wettest month behind January (and not by much either). April and September are the dryest months IIRC, although 'Inners' does seem to have it's own microclimate, sometimes it's torrential rain there all day and dry down the road.
The trails are meant to be excellent but I've not done them and am not kidding myself on having the ability or the bike, although I'd be interested in what might be doable for me, or with a gravel bike (I know that might be asking too much). I stay in my partner's grandad's house when I'm there which is on Leithen Road, the sheer number of MTBers riding past is amazing and has noticeably gone up the last few years.
Not stayed there but the Hydro seems to be trading off it's past reputation unfortunately.
Back home in London now - where it's sheeting down with rain and (if my thermometer is to be believed) it's 16.2 degrees.
The contrast with the Scottish Borders is very strong - I got sunburned sitting outside cafes in Peebles and we rode pretty much everyday in beautiful countryside with clear blue skies.
I am aware that this isn't what Scotland is always like - otherwise I'd not have come home.
Glentress is a great trail centre, I expect Innerleithen is also great but we spent all our time in Glentress because that meant my girlfriend and I could ride the same trails.
I made progress on the tasks I'd been set during the coaching session I had before we left and F had a session at Glentress that she found very helpful.
Next time I head that way I'd stay in the Glentress Hotel if my stay was exclusively about riding, the Tontine Hotel if I wanted to ride and also enjoy the town, head to Edinburgh/other places.
