We let our dog sleep in our room which is really nice, especially when she comes for a cuddle in the morning. The only thing I would say is that due to barely spending any time on her own since she's come to us, even at night, she's now very clingy, especially with my girlfriend who works from home. We're now, having had her for about 7 months, having to work on leaving her alone for a while. We've got a camera to keep an eye on her when we're out and for the first 10 minutes or so she just stands at the patio door and howls
She eventually settles down and is fine but it's not ideal for our neighbors (who are thankfully very fond of Crumpet and very understanding). I think if we'd have the foresight to work on that from when we got her it'd probably be a lot easier for everyone! I know the sleeping situation and separation anxiety aren't necessarily the same thing but I think in our case, Crumpet spending about 24 hours a day in the same room as one of us has made it harder for her to be left alone.

So i tried him in the living room crate open, but I can't shut him in as open plan. But closed bedroom door, he whimperd for a little then okay for 5 min then barked for 20min solid, we have neighbours. So when he then stopped for a little I opened bedroom door he came in lay down at the end of the bed on the floor and fell asleep. I woken up at near 8 and he was asleep on my side on the floor. Took him outside and went for a wee.
Tbh if this is the solution for peaceful night for all, I'm fine with that. He holds his bladder and can wander around the flat. And sleeps quietly on the floor. Just doesn't want to be alone. He's got a bed in his crate, but its hot here so he likes the floor.
In the end I got a dog because I love them and the company.
As you say snotty, he doesn't like the crate, I event got ij with him for 15min and used treats. If he will like it eventually, it's going to take time. He's used to living with his family on the farm so I think being shut up alone isn't normal.
