It’s turning out to be a bit of a monster- worried I’m not doing it justice! 😅 but managed to take it for a test ride today to see how the fit feels. Kind of wish I’d gone for black seatposts in hindsight

@MCamb looking good! So you got a hydro rim brake on the front, V and drum on the back?
For all the chat about 40 & 48 hole rims, the answer is Velocity. Dyad, Atlas & Cliffhanger all exist in kerazy drillings I think.
Also JW tandems have some Exals and Alexes I think, as mentioned upthread.

Looks good. How's the quill adaptor holding up?

So far so good ! Thank you for sorting it out for me. Think I would have really struggled with any available quill fittings :)

Yeah HS33 front (still need to fettle with it, maybe it needs a bleed I’m not sure), canti + drum rear although the drum isn’t attached in this picture. I may add a thumb friction shifter to control it.

Hello all, I am entirely new to this tandem game and I'd love some advice. I've just bought an old motobecane tandem for my parents' 25th anniversary and have begun fixing it up. The rear wheel is needing to be replaced. It's a slightly funky size 27 x 1 1/4, would it be worth replacing with something like 700c or stick with it? Also is a drum brake really necessary and if I were to replace the wheel what stuff should i look for for tandem specific rear wheel? Thanks!

Looks like there's enough brake adjustment available to go from 27" to 700C, and that gives you many more options on rims and tyres. If the front is in the same position, I'd go for it.
Also is a drum brake really necessary
Depends where you ride. For unloaded use in the UK, you probably don't need a third brake.
and if I were to replace the wheel what stuff should i look for for tandem specific rear wheel?
The key dimension is OLN, there is no universal standard. See discussion above about adapting solo hubs and the difficulty of finding anything over 36h

If you don't mind spending all the money, JDTandems have wheels in all the widths

and matching fronts

Brilliant, that's very helpful, thank you very much! The front does have that adjustment room so will go for that. Unfortunately on a student budget I do mind spending all the money however if I get desperate may resort to the link! Thanks

Fitting some different bars and a new thudbuster for the rear, must be time for a trip! Plus time to loose mudguards.

always on the lookout for reasonably price 2 and 2.1 tubeless 26er tyres for ours. I get paranoid there won't be any left. demand is high out there!

A very important piece of my Trek T200 tandem project showed up in the mail today. A 1 1/4" Zoom quill stem modified with a 31.6 clamp. Now I just need to finish building the wheels and assembly can begin.

Have you services that rear hub yet?

Bit late to this but those look like steel rims - so I would definitely swap them. Trying to Brake with steel rims is the rain is absolutely terrifying! Pull as hard as you want and you just keep rolling... If those Weinnmans are 750s you should have enough reach for a 700c wheels. Much better tyre choice in 700c too. I wonder if you might be able to fit a third brake to the bridge the rear mudguard is attached to? It could be controlled by the stoker for emergency use. I'd also recommend fitting Kool Stop V2 brake blocks.

Brill thanks, I've swapped the wheels and will have a look at the third brake!

Back in the game with a £160 FB special. Only 501 but it's been looked after. Will have to be careful not to spend too much on it. Ideal for summer pub trips though, forgot how fun tandems are.

My mate and I will be tandeming with our teenagers to Amsterdam in August.
He doesn't have a Tandem yet. He's after something niceish, light, and hopefully with a modern shifter standards. Probs max £1200. Captain 6ft 2 ish, stoker probs 5ft 5ish.
Anyone got anything? -

There is a trek t900 on the Dutch marktplaats. ad has been placed for at least three times by the same seller, I assume there is not much interest until now. Original asking price was 675 euro, currently asking 575.

Is your stud spacing ok for all 3? What bars/levers are you planning on?
ADHN is a bit low on meat for tandem use. My wife has them on her commuter (rode it today, so nice!), she's very light and they've survived Glasgow's roads for 5 years and some light tours without damage but wouldn't have them on a tandem even in 40h.
Is it that 40h have just dried up this year or has it been before C19? Would expect in the last year that mftr have ditched all the weird products that they make and focus on the core lines so 40h would return in 2022/23
Ryde Andra are solid, seen a few on RTW bikes (70-90kg rider + ALL the gear) and survived just fine in 36h (not tandem, but don't think RTW tandem's are common).
