We had 2 render boxes with dual 64 core EPYC CPUSs for testing last year. The performance was insane none of the Intel machines came even close.

It actually arrived!
Scan did a drop of founders cards the other day, for closer to RRP, including 3070s and 3080s.Sold out in less than 30 seconds…
Had to do a captcha with spotting bikes, it was destiny.

The new Ice Lake 10nm Xeons with 8-channel memory and PCIe 4.0 will give EPYC a run for its money hopefully.
Pricing is looking competitive for the first time ever between the two, and the Intel products may end up having the advantage of being freely available to buy as opposed to AMD, who are massively constrained by TSMC’s fab capacity.
Mad times.

Have had some work on so haven't had time to play with the goxlr yet - will endeavour to soon. In the meantime I'm doing screen recording for a couple of client software demos. I've still got an order in the queue for a 4k eve spectrum when they eventually arrive but in the meantime I use a 1080p monitor. I've recently discovered DSR - which can seemingly display a (fake) 4k output with 1920x1080 available pixels. For screen recording this is brilliant - using OBS to record lossless 4k footage, the clarity (even when I zoom in many times) is amazing. Does it work for games or is there anything better/more modern? Most of the info I can see about it is several years old.

Many games have resolution scaling (aka supersampling) in their graphics options, which is identical in principle to DSR. I guess the scaling algorithms may differ slightly.
Very brute-force method of improving IQ, but if you've got a video card capable of rendering the extra pixels it's well worth using.

/waves in 3090
Thanks - I'll test and find a balance on which looks better / performs better. I've used similar functions in NLEs to 'upscale' to 4k etc but this is a fun surprise.

Fucking 34" LG Ultrawide has developed horizontal pinstripes across the screen. Not tried contacting them yet but it's a year out of warranty so I can imagine what their response is gonna be.
Almost a grand and trash within three years.

I have a spare RX 580 going if anyone is after a GPU atm, will sell for a sensible price too.

Super random question(I know nothing beyond playing minesweeper and doom as a kid).
My partner just asked if it’s possible to livestream and record at the same time using a GoPro for some stuff she’s doing at work.
Livestream would be thru insta and just having the footage to hand to be edited for future use on another platform. No doubt this is a question your average 11yr old could answer but umm, yeah.
-
• #7313
The GoPro on it's own won't be able to do that but it can be used as a webcam in conjunction with streaming / capture software that would allow the feed to be streamed and recorded simultaneously

Want some additional, fast internal storage. I've currently got a 2TB of these: https://shop.westerndigital.com/en-gb/products/internal-drives/wd-black-sn850-nvme-ssd#WDS200T1X0E-00AFY0
I've got a spare nvme slot and could get another of the same drives because who doesn't like matching stuff? But I'd prefer more storage. I don't know what I've got in terms of spare pcie slots. Probably not loads. Would it be hobbled by having my 3090 on my motherboard? Not sure how many lanes are unused or what I'm talking about.
I've seen the 8TB Corsair nvme - https://www.ballicom.co.uk/corsair-cssd-f8000gbmp400-.p1511954.html? Anything else that's punchy for 4tb/8tb?
-
• #7315
Nice board. Your pcie lanes are constrained by your MB and your CPU. The 3090 won’t affect performance of your other slots unless you exceed the capability of your cpu.
But that’s a lorra cash for 8tb. Your board also supports thunderbolt 3, would a Raid direct attached storage over TB be better value? You could throw some fast SSDs in a box for less money. -
• #7316
Yep, the tb3 was the reason I got it. I have 2 X 48TB RAIDs but they're thunderbolt 2 so I use a converter (Gtech ev studio). They're very loud and a bit long in the tooth so I largely use them just for backups and work/play from the local drive.
In time I want to replace with a single 96TB SSD RAID striped to RAID 10 I guess? Should last me 5 years+. But an OTP one would be ££££££ if such a thing even exists (the largest SSD version of my Gtech is 32TB for about £15k!) and not sure what bits I'd need for a home made job. Nor am I sure about reliability. So thinking of just buying a bit of time with more local space to save me plugging in the things and having to put on ear defenders.

I’m more about reliability and convenience so running a similar setup (64tb raid 10) but in a NAS as I need the convenience of file sharing + running untethered most of the time.
Thinking about this a bit more I think you won’t see much performance upside over TB3 switching to SSDs from fast HDs in a raid 10 setup (edit: because I assume you’re sequentially writing, large files?)If you’ve got money to spend and just want speed at all costs then perhaps look at a pcie to dual m,2/Nvie adapter and put both drives in raid 0. You’ll eat a slot but if you’ve already got a 3090 then I don’t imagine you’ll need that second GPU slot. The issue for me is that any kind of solid state drive is never going to last as long or be as reliable as an enterprise grade HD. So if it were me I’d be looking to upgrade the DAS to a TB3/TB4 enclosure and sticking with your existing HDs, assuming they’re fast enough. Maybe you can find one with m.2 cache. And only then spend any spare cash on internal drives.

Akitio do a 4 bay TB raid unit I think it’s a thunder quad something. A couple of those would be quite cost effective, ive got two egpu enclosures made by them (node pro and node titan) and I’ve been really impressed with their kit.
-
• #7319
Thanks for this. Gonna read it properly when brain more functional. I had kind of hoped that there must be some reliable SSDs by now rather than sticking to (even enterprise) spinners. Noise is a big thing - I hate plugging the current RAIDs in because of it.
-
• #7320
Yeah, fast drives are noisy, no question. If you’re got the inclination, enterprise SSDs do exist and they have like 10x lifespan of retail ones, but they’re so expensive I’ve never personally looked in to them much.

Because of a recent issue with an older product scheme, WD are offering a 40% discount for people who have a qualifying unit as an upgrade path. I've still got mine but don't use it - if anyone would like a home NAS at 40% off give me a shout and I'll go through the motions with WD.

I’m a solid WD customer but what happened with their my book range of devices is nothing short of apocalyptic. I imagine there’ll be a massive class action lawsuit being prepared.
-
• #7323
Wouldn’t be surprised if there was something about giving up your rights to roll up into a class action as part of the trade in offer.
-
• #7324
Sorry @se1derful I didn’t mean to sound ungrateful, that’s a kind gesture and someone should take you up on your generosity :)
-
• #7325
That's really sound.
If no one else has already dibs can I jump on this for a My Cloud Home 4TB?
I'll drop you a PM.
Cheers.
Magic device. Use it with my SM58 and it's great
