I think it was because traditional side panniers were less good for off-road stuff - clipping trail features, etc.
With droppers interfering with saddlepacks, the rack top bags above are coming back in fashion. On the road, I've had no issues with my Revelate but if I was carrying more gear, touring, I'd definitely consider using a rack again.

Old Man Mountain makes racks that work on a range of off road bikes.

bet you looked into tailfinn, its ugly enough for a hippy bike

I'm all for a pannier rack for bikepacking. Am I trendsetter?
Was looking at Ortlieb trunk bags recently, something more aero for faster packing. Don't fancy any of those swinging saddle bags unless actually racing.

Not really. I've not had issues with Revelate. Oh think I did look into them for touring GNT but decided a £20 rack was a better idea. Save £200 rather than 200g or whatever.

I've used mine for audax and shorter tours. I really don't notice any swinging. If I was going to be taking a cheap (ie. heavy) tent or something that wouldn't fit, then deffo rack would be an option.

Was being a little flippant, in reality, I can't be bothered to buy more things to get on the saddle bag train but would if racing.

I (somewhat annoyingly) gave my rack away after 14 years of not using it, only to go "oh a rack would be really handy for carrying this tent that I've also not used for 14 years". So, I think they're both useful, just for different things and being a hoarder is no good if you finally get rid of stuff only to immediately need that stuff again.

If you've hung onto something for 14 years always hang onto it for another year. It'll be back in fashion. Guaranteed.

You tell me this now?!
I'm ok with it, my mate's using it now and we never ended up doing the GNT last year anyway. I've now got front bar bag for MTB and another Viscacha so for shorter stuff we can keep using the bivvy bags. If we do GNT and buy a tent then I'll have another look at a rack I guess.

Anyone got old man mountain rack? Think I'll get one

Dug out my Tubus Fly last night which I bought in a Evans clearance 7 years ago (and never used) for our "bikepacking"/offroad touring trip next week. Seem's solid. Is this on trend?

Very! What size dry bag have you got on top? Been thinking about doing the same.

It's a 8L Lomo lightweight one, but I've got a heavier duty alpkit 8l with the strap guides on the way...

Used to love that site back in the day. PBP on Crocs!
Exactly. I am not going to spend loads of money on a minuscule dropper compatible bag when something like a rack exists.
