I think the fact that her parents and I’m assuming other members of her family were immigrants to this country does put her heartlessness toward people currently in the same position in a fairly bad light, but that’s not the same as a racial prejudice.

You definitely can, which is why I’m not a fan of the word bullying as it conveys a stronger larger person abusing a smaller weaker person. Students can bully teachers, employees can bully managers, etc.

Then those teachers, managers have lost their power and authority. Surely?
The stronger abusing the weaker is the accepted use of the word, isn’t it?

It is, which is why I think it would be better to have a different term for it. An adult raising a bullying complaint infers that they are or are perceived to be weak. From a mental health perspective that’s the opposite of what we’d want people to internalise.

Bullying is about power dynamics.
You can call it something else but it will remain what it is.

My son has been ‘bullied’ at school for years (he’s changing school this September - hooray!) but he’s refused to be cowed by the other boy and his sidekicks and still gives it back to him. This made the school slow to see the dynamic for what it is, but it has also meant my son has maintained some self respect - a tricky thing to do in that situation.

The important thing is to change our attitude towards people who are domineering arseholes, after all, they’re the problem.

I think we’re talking at crossed purposes somewhat. I’m not denying what bullying is or whether it exists, I’m saying that the word ‘bullying’ can be victimising and frankly insulting when used for adult interactions. Harassed is a better word, since it describes the same situation without the schoolyard connotations of bullying.

I have a friend who works in government who says this. Just an act. He should think about acting as an alternative career.
