It looked like one arm was along the bottoms of the sign?

there was a second gunman, on the grassy knoll

Was it purposeful that they were dressed as where’s Wally??
-
• #155
It would be a good (if rather niche) fancy dress outfit.
In the tradition of Tornado Tom Frits and LUC, I hope she’ll now be at stage 1 of every TdF.

You’re right, though i was assuming if Dan Martin can win it, Valverde already has.

What else are they (UCI) supposed to do? Give them a good talking to?
Because currently relying on the good sense of spectators doesn’t seem to be ensuring the safety of the riders. And they can’t police every km of road, so how else do you try and deter this sort of thing.Personally I doubt suing this fan will come to much but if the thought of it stops another fan from trying to get on camera as the peloton comes past, or causes another fan with more sense to get them out of the way, then maybe it is worth it.

Education? Fans have also been away from the sport for awhile.
I think the statement I read could have been far more considered. I’m not sure threatening legal action prevents stupidity.
But then TDF or UCI don’t really strike me as a forward thinking organisation generally. -

There are a few references to his salary though, which perhaps is dependent on riding the biggest races.
It was interesting to see how he's settling into a role of taking pressure off less experienced team leaders like Mas. Almost magnanimous and likeable of him.

Education?
Education on such subtle and detailed points like 'if there's a road race heading towards you at 70kph, don't stand in the fucking road'? Maybe they could also cover not practising juggling with hand grenades, or trying to trim your eyebrows with a chainsaw or playing frisbee in the middle of the M1. Because obviously people need to be educated not to be total fucking idiots. It's not their fault.

Wrong person to reply to.
I'm on the iron fist side of this debate.
See:
Opi-Omi are granddad and grandma aren't they?
I hope they give her inheritance to the RNLI and ignore her at Christmas.

Of course but maybe rather than just handing out haribo and polka dot T-shirt’s that the caravan could do something here, maybe they already are.
Personally I blame the riders for riding so close together.

Having caught up with the crash moment on YouTube, what I can't get over is that inane grin on the spectator's face, almost iconic for cluelessness.

There needs to be a TdF version of this:
Dumb ways to ruin a bike race.

Did wonder if they were a little special

Also a massive shame to see Tao lose so much time. Crash 2 was apparently in the last 3km, so if only it had been a sprint stage ...

Ide Schelling, what a character. Had to turn himself completely inside out 3 times before finally getting in the break, wanting to make sure the polka dot jersey remains his for the 1st week
-
• #169
It was about 7km from the finish I think.
-
• #170
Yes, I just re-watched the highlights video and the commentator actually says 'the final few kilometres', which for some reason became 'three' in my mind.

Daniel Friebe asking Very Cool questions to alan like "remember when your dad died a year ago? can you talk about that?" proper bastard stuff

Really enjoyed watching him, great to see someone in their first Tour so clearly enjoying themselves. Honking out of the saddle to win a sprint against non-existent rivals at the intermediate sprint, and fist pumping and whooping with the crowd on taking the final climb and securing the polka dot jersey.
I think they said on commentary he trains all winter riding fixed too, and doesn't bother with altitude camps, so he does sound his own man and a bit of a throwback. Look forward to seeing more of him.

Also came here to adore him.
Got ydays stage ruined by itv clicking "see more about this show!" hoping to get various broadcasts.
Video pops up with caption "Alaphillipe dominates final climb to take first stage". Half grumble half caution
#analysis: I think it was the bottom arm of the fan (hidden by stupid sign) extended underneath that caught his bars.
