  • What do people do when you're in a coffee shop and you've just been served a cup of steaming mud water?

Ask for another, have a glass of water instead, or just sit and drink it, while seething internally?

  • I think the key is to try and avoid buying a coffee unless you know it won't be shit tbh.

There is a JH video about drinking shit coffee, something about helping you appreciate good coffee, but as someone who tries to keep it to 1 or 2 cups a day, I'm not that keen on wasting a precious cup on mud water!

  • What do people do when you're in a coffee shop and you've just been served a cup of steaming mud water?

I'd ask @Sumo or @mmccarthy to pour it away and go make me another one.

  • try and avoid buying a coffee unless you know it won't be shit

This. If I've any doubts I don't even try.

  • Yeah I think sending it back will potentially just make the staff feel like shit.
Unless it’s a good cafe that you’ve had good coffee from before and have now been served a shit one. Actually I still wouldn’t say anything.

  • Looool very good.

  • That's all you're allowed

  • Yeah I think sending it back will potentially just make the staff feel like shit.

What about the poor bloody customer?!? Are you British by any chance? 😆

  • Anyone tried any beans from Colonna?

  • Yep - their rare ranges are lovely. I haven’t tried the others for a while

  • Cafe near me uses Colonna. Always good.

  • Feel like there are more Niche availability each week these days!

  • Just got my shipping notice this morning - was expecting July, but coming tomorrow. I haven’t had an availability notice since I ordered one, which is nice of them too! They must be satisfied enough of demand to be scaling up production.

  • Yeah just realised mine is arriving today!

  • New grinder day here too. Timemore c2, £40 from AliExpress, took a week to come - seems like a great deal tbh.

  • I’ve been grinding through some shit/random old beans I had in the back of the cupboard to break the new grinder in after my first cup was a bit lack lustre (had a decent layer of sludge on top) and read that it usually takes about a kg of beans to take the really sharp edges off the burrs, and after that the fines should decrease. First cup wasn’t exactly bright.

A slightly related question is, should I rinse the grounds if I want to use them in compost? Caffeine not being great, or am I overthinking it?

  • Everyone I know just dumps the used stuff in, their gardens don’t seem to suffer for it.

  • Anyone that's been wondering about adjusting the pressure off their Gaggia Classic, I can totally recommend the Shades of Coffee kit, takes like 5 mins to fit, and the 9 bar spring has made a huge difference. It's now way more consistent, with virtually no channeling, and a good amount of crema.

  • Aye, but my question is really about unused grounds. I've just smashed a load of old/undrinkable beans through the grinder to break the grinder in, but it seems really wasteful to bin them, but I also don't want to shag my plants with a potential contaminant.

I'm probably overthinking it, and will likely just add a load of boiling water to them and pour off the water to be sure.

  • Ah sorry, misunderstood.

  • Good to keep away slugs, cats etc and that amount shouldn’t do much harm

  • New kettle day.
