Ale, Beer, Stout appreciation

  • Walthamstow's on our to do list as a lot of our friends have moved there this past year

  • If you are up that way , over in Leytonstone … a very nice little brewery in a railway arch - The Solvay Society - very low key but some excellent tasting beers …. Belgian inspired … possibly the brewer is Belgian … forgotten the details as I’d tried a few of their 7% odd Saisons and a very nice Biere de Garde ….

  • The Solvay Society

Been on my list for ages. Guy in Weird Beard told me about them and my mate now lives nearby and keeps sending my pics. (but never any beers, the bastard!)

  • I've got some credit to spend with them thanks to their crowdfunder. I visited their old brewery s few years ago, it's good they've moved a bit closer. Brewer is called Roman and he is Belgian.

  • Just passed through Tesco Express and not only were there no Jungle Trips, the price had gone up to £2.40. Grumble. Will have to try and buy a batch direct, although site not working for me currently.

  • Same. New batch in -> price hoicked.

  • This is good, label & flavours!

  • Am after a small beer in the 2.5 to 3.5% range, that I can get from a main supermarket. Any suggestions?

  • Is it delicious?

I have some of this but it came mail order, need something I can cycle to

  • Is it delicious?

I doubt it, but in the eye of the beholder n'all that.

The lightest I've found lately is United Planet at the coop. 4%, tasty. Brewdog though so a reluctant purchase.

  • i could stretch to 4% but then I may as well stretch to 4.5% :)

Looking further I see Double Barrelled and Phantom breweries both have something suitable and they are within distance.

  • Had a trip to Morrisons earlier. Only had the Vocation/Brew York stout so far but it was really good.

  • Was in Morrison’s earlier and they had a really good selection - much better than Waitrose. This is in Northampton so not sure if same everywhere.

  • The beer selection at my local supermarkets seems really variable in regards to the variety and 'interestingness' of the beers on offer, even with branches a couple of miles apart:
    Asda: 1 ok, 1 poor.
    Sainsbury's: mediocre
    Morrisons: 2 ok, 1 excellent
Tesco: 1 pretty good, 1 excellent
Waitrose: 1 ok, 1 excellent (now sadly closed)

There don't seem to be any obvious factors (location, age, size) for predicting which branches will have better beer selections; maybe it's just down to the enthusiasms of the branch managers?

  • Does anyone fancy a couple of bottles of coffee Porter?

    https://windsweptbrewing.com/beer/coffeeporter/

I got four in a mixed case.
I like their other dark ales and Speyside Coffee. But first impression was awfull, confirmed by not being able to drink any of the second bottle!

  • Northern Monk have distilled their Death Imperial Stout to 41% ABV and are selling it as “Spirit of Death” from tomorrow

  • a solid gold beer can that turns out to be made of brass is such a fitting metaphor for BrewDog

  • I wouldn’t have thought managers will have any say. It will be based on EPoS data.

Our smallish Tesco has a decent range whereas the one 15 minutes away carries very little craft beer despite being bigger.

  • Some slap off this in the acidity stakes. Good liquid. Mikkeller/ Boon Gout Americain

  • Ordered the "bundle"
Bottle of the Spirit of Death, can of Death and a Death scented candle.

I'm hoping it doesn't smell of death...

  • Last night i had a can of Juice Forsyth
It is very fruity, almost like a glass of squash.
I enjoyed it, and a lunchbox friendly 5% (I emulate "are Hippy" and tend to gravitate towards higher ABVs)
