Apparently their bearing seals are not so great...
I got years out of my RS4s hubs bearings, on a daily bike that has spent 3 years stored outside. And I live in Denmark, not California, it rains a lot.

Same. Had rs4s on my talbot for three years in London and New York (coldest wettest place ever) and did l i t e r a l l y no maintenance on them at all. Great hubs.

I'm at 34,000km on my RS4s. Zero maintenance.

rs4s disc on my croix de fer too, i'd rate them

I know I know....
I reckon my RS4 rear has done about 8-10k km a year for the last 3 or 4 years: all year round, zero problems, zero maintenance.
Matthew has recommended Rideworks, which I'd never heard of but seem pretty good so I'm happy with that. Quite like that the parts list is starting to include some less obvious choices.

Link or it didn't happen!

Yes I believe so.... although so far the only CK part on this bike will be the headset.
Hubs are Carbon-ti (either acid green or dark green is my current thinking), bb is hopefully rideworks if they have stock. -

Back to wheels... I pulled the trigger on acid green hubs then had a wobble and thought dark green looked more interesting.
I also saw some Mavic rims in real life and and they were kinda disappointing. They have a very ugly join in the carbon that has been missed off all the CGI promo images. Given that they're also quite hard to find in the UK atm (everyone's favourite bargain basement Condor is pretty much the only place that still has any), I have reverted to the original plan, and settled on 35mm Venns. They're the go-to choice of DCR and Saffron so that's good enough for me. They're also cheaper, woop woop!
This is the current shit photoshop thing I'm staring at every 5 minutes... don't worry, you don't have to cast more votes if you don't want to, I'm just over-sharing while I procrastinate in the studio:

I quite like how the low-contrast hubs/spokes/rims go with the high-contrast frame/forks.
It's almost tasteful, which is something of a red flag for this build. -

Why not all hope bearings?

• #312
You mean why not Hope headset, hubs and BB?

Just get hope . Yes a bit heavy but never had a problem and used stuff for 20 years+ . I would trust them with my children if i had any.
Their GXP adaptors are pretty nasty though. I'd think twice before using one with a GXP crank again.

Matthew is dead against Hope so I'll take his word for it.
I think we might be able to get hold of a black Sram BB, so that'll do for now. I'll save my pennies for when it breaks.Having said that, GXP does seem like a bit of a pain in the arse with their unconventional 24/22mm axle nonsense. I'm half tempted to sell the Sram chainset and get something more standardised (like Rotors) just to teach Sram a lesson.
They read this thread every day and they're completely obsessed with it.
In other news, apparently Venn (for some reason) only put a decent braking surface on their 30mm and 50mm rims; a luxury not extended to the 35mm version. Baffling, but there it is. As I'm not particularly keen on either 30mm or 50mm (purely on aesthetics I'm ashamed to admit), it is time to go back to the drawing board.
Since someone on here suggested them, I've been reading lots of reviews about Light Bicycle wheels and they sound extremely impressive for the price.... They also happen to offer a 35mm rim with a decent braking surface so they are really speaking my language.
@Glws you have pm - sell me your hooops!

anyone dead against Hope is a donut

Unless they've tried removing the Hope GXP adaptors from a Hope BB, in which case their attitude is entirely understandable.

Matthew is dead against Hope
In general? why? Hope stuff is amazing.

Laser etching allergy?

This is getting very complicated :)
Sram gxp is certainly nor the best system, but seems to me suited to a non oversized steel build. Its not like a 30mm spindles will release the watts. Newest rotor cpuld look great on the build though.
Hope is hope, looks great visually and the freehub sound is only second to CK. What trauma did saffron guy suffer ?!
The usual formula for these builds is that BB has to match and/or headset/hubs?
